Black Bear Mauls Florida Woman, Drags Her Out of Garage
Yahoo ^ | 4-13-2014 | LIZ FIELDS

Posted on 04/13/2014 2:43:20 PM PDT by Darren McCarty

The hunt is on today for a black bear who mauled a woman at her home in an upscale central Florida neighborhood, leaving her with injuries to her face, legs and torso and requiring her to get 40 stitches to the head.

Terri Frana of Lake Mary, Fla., went to her garage Saturday evening to grab bicycles for her children to ride down to their neighbor's house when the attack happened, according to her husband, Frank Frana.

As soon as the children left, Frana, 45, saw two bears in the driveway. She walked to the patio area where there were five bears eating trash that they had pulled out of the garage, her husband said.

"The bear got up on [its] hind legs and started to maul her, opened its jaws and put her head in the mouth and dragged her towards the woods," Frank Frana said. "Somehow she was able to pull herself out."

"The bears were various sizes so we think it's probably cubs of different maturity and perhaps a mama bear," the Seminole County Sheriff's Office told ABC News.

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission said there was at least one bear involved in the attack but couldn't corroborate the report that there had been five bears.

Frana managed to get inside the house, said her husband. Her son found her collapsed in the living room and called 911. She was then taken to a local hospital where she was treated for at least three bear bites and several cuts all over her body.

Frana was released from the hospital Sunday morning and is recovering at home, her husband said.

Didn't know there were bears in Florida. I figured there were too many people.

Wonder if some folks were feeding the bears since they usually try to avoid people.

The bears were eating her trash and she must have been wearing taming lotion or something that smelt better than the trash.

I saw a bumper sticker that said “A trash bear is a dead bear” meaning not to leave trash out.

There are certainly a lot of people in Florida, but there are enormous areas of wilderness. This is on the North side of Orlando, and it just so happens to be only a few miles away from a location named “Black Bear Wilderness Area” which is southeast of Ocala National Forest.

The problem we have here is that people think the bears are “cute.” I can’t tell you how many times people have posted pictures of the bears that they’ve spotted getting into the trash here in my neighborhood. I try to tell people - (1) do NOT leave your trash out overnight, and (2) if you see a bear, do everything in your power to scare the bear away. Yet people persist in watching the bears do this again and again. I swear I think some people are leaving the cans out as bait so that they can get a glimpse of a bear. Stupid, stupid, stupid!

Now why did they have to give the race of the bear?

There are bears all over the southeast.
We used to have a season on ‘em here in Georgia,
not sure if we do now or not.

Guess the bears wanted more than just a “pick-a-nick basket.”

If I saw five bears eating trash in my driveway, I don’t think I’d go strolling up to them. She was lucky not to get hurt worse.

I live in the Florida Panhandle in a rural area. There are not a lot of bears in this area but I do occasionally see one.

A few years ago someone ran over one near here. They seem to have a bit of a problem with them in the Panama City area.

Oh my. You been vacationing on Mars or somewhere> :)

Do some searching.

A lot of Florida is overrun with bears - some people hardly dare leave their homes. But NO ONE is allowed to harm a bear. Their lives are more precious than humans. (Thank God her children got off on their bikes before the bear attack) p>Since no one is allowed to harm hem, they are totally unafraid of humans.

If these people had shooed this bear off - they probably would have faced fines for scaring him. (NOT a joke)

my first and most vivid account of bears was watching them from a car at the Old Forge garbage dump....they came out every night and people would just shine their headlights at them....of course that was back when people were cruel, mean spirited, square, and didn’t care about the bigger issues in life like the kardashians and their black boyfriends...

This story went national. I grew up in North Michigan, which is bear country.
