UConn’s Napier: ‘We do have hungry nights’ (College athlete unions)
CT Mirror ^ | 4/7/2014 | Jacqueline Rabe Thomas

Shabazz Napier, point guard for The University of Connecticut's men's basketball team, recently told reporters he understands why athletes at Northwestern need a union, as he sometimes has to go to bed "starving" because he cannot afford food.

"We as student athletes get utilized for what we do so well. We are definitely best to get a scholarship to our universities, but at the end of the day, that doesn't cover everything. We do have hungry nights that we don't have enough money to get food and sometimes money is needed," the senior told reporters. "I think, you know, Northwestern has an idea, and we'll see where it goes."

Most academic scholarships don't provide stipends, and those that do are frequently targeted to books and other specifically academic expenses. Besides which, students on academic scholarship are actually in school for the purpose of school. "Student" athletes aren't.

A better plan is to tell the NFL and the NBA to start their own farm systems and stop paying the tuition of chronic discipline problems [and apparently whiners] to take worthless classes in sports "medicine" and kinesiology, and even then graduating at a rate of only 50-65% of the rest of the school.

$1 will get you 5 oodles of noodles.

Or 4 Oodles of Noodles and one 6-pack of Piels. Sometimes in life one just has to make the tough calls.

Well if student athletes aren’t there for school then the whole free school thing is clearly not adequate compensation.

http://www.dining.uconn.edu/resident_dining_hours.html

Dining halls are all you can eat. Three of the dining halls are apparently open until 10PM sun-Thur, and fri/sat close at 7:15 PM.

Apparently there are a couple of traffic lights along the campus, south of mirror lake, the second of which has a strip mall of mixed sit down and grab and go restraunts...plus the food court in the student union.

All students living in the dorms have to have a meal plan which has unlimited access to the cafeterias while they are open, plus an allotment of flex plans which allow them to Get a limited number of pre packaged meals at kiosks on campus (lowest plan has 35 per semester).

It is like working for the mafia. I have no respect for them at all. I hope this union thing puts them out of business.

Never going to happen.

The NLRB ruling hasn't even made it all the way up the hearing process and still has to go to Federal Court. That's a decade away. Even if the Supreme Court ruled in favor of a union -- it won't -- universities can't allow it to happen because they couldn't possibly function without the near slave labor provided by senior undergrads and graduate students to run labs, correct papers, and do teaching.

The universities would have to cut faculty salaries if that happened, or do away with their sports programs. Universities are run by their Faculty Senates, most of whom don't want sports on their campuses. Guess which one will happen?

Everyone in a University who is not tenured faculty is treated like crap. Athletes have fewer reasons to complain than many others. The best solution is to get rid of "student" athletes. Period.

If they’re not there for school they shouldn’t be there at all.

Wow even the Muslims don't go hungry at UConn.

Shabazz should be ashamed of himself.

I find it hard to believe that any star athlete on a scholarship at a state university goes to bed hungry unless he has the munchies after smoking too much dope.

I'm late to the thread, but awesome post!

I’m going to go out on a limb and say this guy is seriously exaggerating.

He is. An an athlete he has access to training tables for his sport as we'll as a food card. Value about $7,000.00 per year

He has free housing value about $9,000 per year

He has free books for about a $4,000 per year bennie.

U of Conn has an out of state tuition of about $15,450 per semester or about $7,000 for in state tuition.

So this little is getting a free ride at college of at a minimum of $34,000 to about $52,000 per year if he does not come from CT and pay out of state tuition - tax free, BTW, - to play basket ball.

Add a 30% tax rate and he has the equivalent of a $65,000 per year job to shoot hoops for 4 or 5 months out the year

He should keep his F’n mouth shut, there are tons of High School B-Ball players who would kill to have that deal in a competitive market.

Free tuition, books, fees, tutors and food. He’s full of bull.

On the other side, the college is making a ton of money on his sport. If he joins a union, will he have to pay taxes on the tuition and other items?

“I find it hard to believe that any star athlete on a scholarship at a state university goes to bed hungry unless he has the munchies after smoking too much dope. ”

Think athletes are the only ones getting hungry late night? Let's see, it was about a 3 hour breakfast window, a 4 hour lunch window, a 3 hours dinner window and a 2 hour midnight snack window. Only time that was short was no cafeteria for Sunday dinner and midnight snack. Almost forgot, the student union restaurant was about 1/3 the cost of an off campus hamburger plus had beer. What a whiner and privileged primadonna plus the athletes have their own private cafeteria separate from the common students.

I know every school is probably different, but when I was at Indiana (late 80's), I knew 2 of the players on the football team (not friends, just knew them pretty well). Trust me, those guys didn't go without food. Hell, these guys couldn't go 2 hours without eating. They would bring back sacks of fresh burritos and hamburgers from their food hall and the dorks like me who were on a 10 meal per week plan sometimes got to share in the bounty if we happened to be over there hanging out.

I don't know about all the other perks, I never asked... but I can tell you one thing for damn sure, they ate VERY well
