Shabazz Napier, point guard for The University of Connecticut's men's basketball team, recently told reporters he understands why athletes at Northwestern need a union, as he sometimes has to go to bed "starving" because he cannot afford food.
"We as student athletes get utilized for what we do so well. We are definitely best to get a scholarship to our universities, but at the end of the day, that doesn't cover everything. We do have hungry nights that we don't have enough money to get food and sometimes money is needed," the senior told reporters. "I think, you know, Northwestern has an idea, and we'll see where it goes."

Or the dude couldn’t plan ahead and bring some fruit and cheese back from the dining hall?
(That said, there is something off in the way colleges cash in on these “student athletes”.
UConn, one of the best BBall schools in the country, doesn’t feed its players well...yeah.
I don’t. This story isn’t new. Remember unlike academic scholarships they don’t get a stipend, they’re working 50 hours a week at the sport so there’s no time for a job, if they take ANY kind of freebie from anybody that’s potentially compensation and against NCAA rules. The NCAA has made sure the system is terrible. If we’re not going to give them a stipend at least let them sell their autographs.
I guess this "student" got a call from someone in the Obama administration to goose this thing up.
Maybe part time jobs would be helpful
I bet Kentucky feeds their players (and recruits) much better....hint...hint.
UConn obviously does not pay its players nearly as well as Kentucky does.
Subtle. :)
I find it hard to believe that Shabazz doesn’t have some type of scholarship that includes tuition, room, board, books, fees, supplies, and something with an all-you-can-eat dining hall privilege. And probably put out snacks for them at every practice or team meeting.
I’m going to go out on a limb and say this guy is seriously exaggerating.
Normally, I’d root for the SEC.
I hope UConn beats them by 50.
I’ll pick UConn by 13.
Caf closed, no meeting today, road trips. There’s always ways to wind up needing to buy your own food, which can be tough when the NCAA basically outlaws you getting money.
Virginia Tech is the same way.
I find it in-credible that UConn would not treat their basketball stars at least as well as those at other schools.
I think anyone who isn’t a Kentucky student or alum is rooting for UConn tonight.
I’m an IU fan.
I would root for the North Koreans against Kentucky.
Seriously.
Again, please. Here in Dallas for the Cotton Bowl teams, they eat scot free at Lawry's Prime Rib for publicity.
You might not like the NCAA and some minor sports such as womens field hockey may go lacking, but there is no way a basketball player at a 1-A school powerhouse goes hungry at night.
When I was a student, athletes got open eating privileges at my college’s dining halls. Is that not true any more?
