I don’t. This story isn’t new. Remember unlike academic scholarships they don’t get a stipend, they’re working 50 hours a week at the sport so there’s no time for a job, if they take ANY kind of freebie from anybody that’s potentially compensation and against NCAA rules. The NCAA has made sure the system is terrible. If we’re not going to give them a stipend at least let them sell their autographs.
I find it hard to believe that Shabazz doesn’t have some type of scholarship that includes tuition, room, board, books, fees, supplies, and something with an all-you-can-eat dining hall privilege. And probably put out snacks for them at every practice or team meeting.
Watch the game tonight, and write down all of the names of the players who are anorexic.
I am guessing that if going to bed hungry was a legitimate issue, the coach could arrange an after practice meal.
In exchange for participating in their schools’ athletic program, they get to attend their school of higher education gratis. Street value of anywhere between 20,000 - 40,000 / year.
Sounds like a good deal to me.
The NCAA sucks.
I was a photographer for 11 d2 and d3 national championships. I was licensed to sell photos to the athletes and their families (really—who else is going to want d3 field hockey pictures? I could only sell them for two weeks and I had to give the NCAA 50% of the revenue. So I had to increase my price to these kids and their families. This was done under the premise that I would screw the families and gouge the prices to them.
It is like working for the mafia. I have no respect for them at all. I hope this union thing puts them out of business.
A better plan is to tell the NFL and the NBA to start their own farm systems and stop paying the tuition of chronic discipline problems [and apparently whiners] to take worthless classes in sports "medicine" and kinesiology, and even then graduating at a rate of only 50-65% of the rest of the school.
