If Diane Francis had her way, the U.S. would share a lot more with its northern neighbor than the Great Lakes, maple syrup and Justin Bieber.
The editor-at-large for Torontos National Post argues that a complete merger of Canada and the United States would create a global colossus, add 13 stars to the American flag, eliminate the border and require just a few amendments to the Constitution. But, Ms. Francis acknowledged on a visit to Washington last week, not everyone up north is thrilled with the idea.
I wanted to attack the Canadian establishment and say, Wake up, there is [a merger] underway, lets manage it to our benefit, and to attack American ignorance about Canada, she said.
The thought experiment, first broached in a book she published late last year, was introduced on the 20th anniversary of the North American Free Trade Agreement as President Obama pushed for much broader trade agreements with the European Union and Asia-Pacific nations.
Ms. Francis envisions a full-on economic and political merger in which Canadas provinces would become 13 states in the U.S. Quebec would become a commonwealth like Puerto Rico.

I do belive in the original US Articles of Confederation, Canada was allowed to become a member of the United States at their own will..personally I think that should be a Canada, America & Mexico but we be able to trade states or counties or even just citys
Sure - and we have a newly appointed finance minister as well. The one that just left wasn’t conservative enough. One problem - what do we do with Quebec?
speak French and look toward the east.
Not going to happen. Quebec is not going to become part of a huge English speaking super country. It will secede long before the US and English Canada ever merge.
Canada NO!
we’re coming for your dinosaur museum!!
I’ll be enjoyed enclosed in your gentle rain.
How's Steven's golf game?? Of course, a mannequin could lead better than Obama...
Harper could make a good president but what if we wound up with justin bieber instead. Eh? ( yes I know, still a big improvement )
I like Canada just the way it is, thanks.
I’m unclear why we would need amendments to absorb Canada.
We annexed Texas, an independent country, by a joint resolution of both houses of Congress after the President was unable to get the necessary 2/3 in the Senate to ratify a treaty of annexation.
Based on this precedent, all we need is a majority in Congress.
Adding new states is a process with lots of precedent. Based on their population, about 12% of ours, Canada should be admitted as about 8 states.
Keep Pam ... has to be in the deal ... okay?
no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, and hell no.
Why would we want Quebec and why would they want our congress and Federal reserve? Sounds like a match made in hell to me. If anything the trend for the next 20 years will be towards smaller states, not larger ones.
Sorry, my math makes no sense. Canada should come in as 4 or 5 states giving them 8 or 10 senators.
We are getting to the goal of 57 states with those 3...
The 4 Maritime Provinces might get in as one state,
No... They should be part of Maine...
Tim Hortons is not enough.
I'd rather have Dunkin and Krispy Kreme..
What about British Columbia??
’ keep the french’
We like their fries...
We don’t need to “join forces”.
The USA (and allies) just need to stop acting like total puss*es if they want to be powerful leaders.
gotta get’em drunk first.
