Sandwich chain Quiznos is preparing to file for bankruptcy protection within weeks as it contends with declining sales and a lofty debt load, people familiar with the matter said.
The company, which has about $570 million in debt, has been negotiating with creditors for weeks on a restructuring plan that would streamline its trip through bankruptcy court, these people said. A final deal on a so-called prepackaged restructuring plan hasn't yet been reached, they said.

They used to be big, but they changed the size of the loaves they use a while back, basically making a whole sandwich out of what used to be a half-sandwich size. It takes two of their subs now to make what used to be their large. The closest Quiznos to me is a rest stop just outside of Albany, NY on the NYS Thruway. That's an hour and a half from me. My son lives in Troy, NY, and the last time I stopped after visiting him, the cost of two of their sandwiches with tax were close to $20.00. There used to be a Quiznos about 12 miles from me, but it closed 4-5 years ago. A Five Guys took over the place.
We had a Five Guys here too, but it closed within two years. The food was too greasy for me, and way too expensive for this depressed area. A Moe's Southwest Grill is supposed to open in it's place, but who knows how long it will last. This is a small city, and we've already got two Mexican restaurants, and now a third is on its way. We've got the usual fast food, and way too many family owned pizza shops. Applebee's is the only dine-in chain restaurant in this city.
The best subs I've ever had are from DiBella's Old Fashioned Submarines. They use real lunchmeat, and their prices are very reasonable. I can buy a large sub, and get four meals out of it. Again, the closest ones to me are in Albany and Rochester, so I don't get to have them very often. They are also in Conn., Mich., Penn., and soon to be in Ohio.
At least they sold real food. With so many people starting to seriously cut personal spending, many realizing their aging process and some starting to show concern about their health (not to mention the health insurance crunch), convenience stores may be much more unpopular soon.
Subway SUCKS!

Have you tried a 14” Meatball sub from Wegman’s? 2200 calories in one meal.
I live in MA and have never seen a Wegman’s.
I LOVE meatball subs but just like finding a good sub shop a great meatball sub has become verrry hard to find.
It seems like all of the local places all buy their meatballs from the same food distributor.
And the places that tout “home made” have pretty poor consistency.
It seem like it is very hard to find a good meatball sub nowadays...
The one that was close to me was just out of Allentown, Pa. in Emmaus.
When it opened, I guess about 7 years ago it was like a Godsend to us.
We’re transplanted here from N.Y. and found most of the local food atrocious (sorry Pa’ers).
Quizno’s served a quality product and we were willing to pay for it. I didn’t think it would last long here though due to the prices. It closed about 4 years ago I think and we never found another.
Sorry to hear the sandwiches got smaller. That was one of their best qualities. One sandwich was really two meals. I still won’t eat at Subway’s though. I don’t consider it food.
You just triggered some real old memories for me. I’m remembering Kmart and the little deli area and I’m remembering walking by a rack of KISS posters with them in platform heels and full makeup. The camera angle is from about 4 feet off the ground. It’s 1978 and I am there.
That’s a shame. I was surprised a few weeks ago when the local Quiznos suddenly closed when they seemed like they were always busy for lunch. They were a lot better than the other subs shops in town (Subway, Jimmy Johns, Planet Sub) especially their bread selections. I usually went about once a week to get the soup in a bread bowl.
I was born and raised in Rochester, NY, which is where Wegman's started, and where their headquarters are. I live an hour east of Syracuse, and Wegman's has never gone any farther east than Syracuse. I periodically drive the hour to shop there, or stop if I'm visiting family in Rochester.
Wegman’s has the best subs in Pennsylvania.
I usually only get a BMT salad from Subway, or a Tuna sub.

I love Quiznos. Not only were their sandwiches delicious they had a pickle and pepper bar that I would use to load up my sandwich. One large was good enough to eat lunch and dinner both.
They closed the one here though :-(
wow,, I’ve seen ‘em open a couple and close around here too, usually a subway or pizza joint follows them in the location.
too many choices in fast food, its dog eat dog.. 570 million in debt ain’t good either.
Quiznos closed their location in less than a month.
Subway appears to be doing fine. Maybe partnering up with Michelle made the difference.
What turned me off from Subway happened years ago.
I was in Amherst Ma and ordered a steak and cheese sub.
Expecting to watch the guy pull out some shaved steak and cook it up on the grill instead he grabbed some tongs and pulled out a steaming pile of grey meat out of a steamer buffet thingamajig and slap in on a roll.
I threw it out.
Years later I tried a nasty disgusting Italian sub from a different store.

I’m going to go way back for my favorite: Chicago in the late 40s, when I was a kid. Italian beef sandwiches from Pat’s on the near-north side. Just thin-sliced brisket, redolent with Italian spices, soaked in a thin, spicy gravy, and layered thick on a fresh Italian bread roll. Price: 35 cents.

I’ve found that the best places for meatball (or Italian sausage) subs is your favorite little mom’n pop hole-in-the-wall Italian restaurant. I won’t do Quizno’s (got sick both times after I ate there) nor Subway any longer.
