Gov. Jan Brewer on Wednesday vetoed a Republican bill that set off a national debate over gay rights, religion and discrimination and subjected Arizona to blistering criticism from major corporations and political leaders from both parties.
Brewer's decision defused a national furor over gay rights and religious freedom.
The bill backed by Republicans in the Legislature was designed to give added protection from lawsuits to people who assert their religious beliefs in refusing service to gays. But opponents called it an open attack on gays that invited discrimination.
The bill thrust Arizona into the national spotlight last week after both chambers of the state legislature approved it. As the days passed, more and more groups, politicians and average citizens weighed in against Senate Bill 1062. Many took to social media to criticize the bill, calling it an attack on gay and lesbian rights.

Then why try to pass the bill?
Why do lawmakers do anything? To score political points ahead of an election.
Love to. But too many abject morons with the philosophy that they will vote Republican NO MATTER WHAT make it a pretty hard proposition.
NO MATTER WHAT has consequences. This is one of them.
Oh, dear no, please! That is not a Christian response at all. Another Freeper suggested that the business people pray while they work, put Scripture verses on the cakes (although I suppse they could be sued for not giving them what they ordered), or something like that.
I think Christians have 2 choices. They can either refuse and suffer for their faith, which we are called to do. Or, they could contract the work out to people who do not object to homosexual “marriage”, and then donate any profit to a charity (perhaps one that helps homosexuals repent) or to a church.
Retaliating is not an option.
A lot of this is possible because of the duplicity of Republican primary voters and not just in AZ, but they have some of the worst ones there.
All Christian owned businesses need to post HUGE signs in their windows, promising that a good percentage of their proceeds will be donated to Christian charities as well as traditional marriage groups.
Cake bakers - make a scripture on every cake part of your “signature” decorating. Photographers, incorporate scripture into pictures as part of your art. There are ways to use this to proclaim God’s word, which will never be returned void.___________________________________________

4% of the population is gay. 60% are spiritual and Christians. Like anything else or any other business they don’t want to piss off potential consumers or viewers. That is why they are PC about this. When Christians start canceling DirecTV and get bored of watching football and their funding and revenue stream is threatened then And only then will they pay attention.
In my humble opinion, the best way to handle a gay marriage request to a baker is for the Baker to say “okay I will be happy to take your money. But I am going to donate the entire check you write to _____ (fill in the blank with your favorite anti gay marriage group). Here is your bill, and I am just going to endorse it and deposit it Straight to their fundraising account.

The reason for any feeling of defeatism is the perception by Conservatives that Obama and the Dems could eat live babies on national TV and still get the votes of the Blacks and other minorities and Liberals and the Gimme voters.
Along with enough dead, felons, illegals, imaginary people and dogs, cats and such to tip the elections.
So when can I walk into my local halal butcher and order my Easter ham, with my attorney on speed-dial for when they refuse?

State laws requiring segregation of blacks from whites are another matter and are unconstitutional (14th Amendment). The feds have a Constitutional right to interfere with state laws that require segregation of blacks from whites.
However, the feds have no other Constitutional authority to interfere with any other form of discrimination on the state level and the feds have no Constitutional authority whatsoever to interfere with the God given right of individuals and businesses to exercise their freedom of discrimination (freedom to choose) as they see fit.
Some other freepers were entertaining how various other nationally known Republicans would have handled the situation if they were in Brewer's shoes and under a one-way non-stop assasult from the liberal media, NFL, etc., etc. Here's my guess:
Mitt Romney - Vetoes bill, gives some carefully worded interview claiming he supports the idea of religious freedom of association and the reasons for the bill "in principle", but the legislation as written "takes it one step too far and raises concerns it may endanger the safety of the gay and lesbian community of Arizona"
Rick Santorum - Signs bill, liberals destroy him over it the following election cycle.
Newt Gingrich - Vetoes bill, holds press conference with some ultra left wing radical gay activist about how they're "coming together on this issue despite our vast differences on other issues", because the legislation is "heartless" to the gay community. Newt's lesbian sister then gets invited to all the nighty talk shows to praise her brother's "courage" for standing up to the "extreme right" on this issue.
Ron Paul - Vetoes bill, gives some babbling Paulite speech about how he's doing so to save the constitution. His deranged cult eats it up and says you hate the constitution if you don't agree with Ron.
Jon Huntsman - Not only vetoes bill, but actively campaigns 24/7 to prevent it from passing in the first place.
Rick Perry - Signs bill, but is caught off guard when he's asked why later, and can offer "Religion is good" as his talking point. A reporter asks "Would you support Muslims refusing to serve Jewish Americans because of their religious beliefs, Governor?" to which Perry replies "Christianity is good. I'm a Christian. Religion works."
Michele Bachmann - Signs bill without hesitating, and forcefully fights efforts to overturn it.
Herman Cain - Hard to say. My guess is hesitates but eventually does the right thing.
Gary Johnson - Vetoes bill without hesitating, says its "nonsense" and the state has more important things to worry about.
Ted Cruz - Signs bill without hesitating.
Rand Paul - Vetoes bill, gives some nice folksy speech afterwards about how he understand why "good people of faith" have "legitimate concerns" about being coerced into doing something against their beliefs, but the bill needs to be killed from the standpoint of "not using big government to solve all our problems"
Marco Rubio - Hesitates, eventually quietly signs bill only because he desperately wants to salvage his reputation with conservatives after the fallout from amnesty. Refuses to answer all questions about it.
Allen West - Signs bill without hesitating, gives some cool soundbite about it.
Ben Carson - Hard to say since we don't really know his stance on issues like this. But assuming he's with us, I doubt any liberal pressure would sway him otherwise.
Sarah Palin - Was only Governor of Alaska for a brief period of time, but I'm fairly certainly she'd sign the bill even if the liberal media was screaming about it.
