Gov. Jan Brewer on Wednesday vetoed a Republican bill that set off a national debate over gay rights, religion and discrimination and subjected Arizona to blistering criticism from major corporations and political leaders from both parties.
Brewer's decision defused a national furor over gay rights and religious freedom.
The bill backed by Republicans in the Legislature was designed to give added protection from lawsuits to people who assert their religious beliefs in refusing service to gays. But opponents called it an open attack on gays that invited discrimination.
The bill thrust Arizona into the national spotlight last week after both chambers of the state legislature approved it. As the days passed, more and more groups, politicians and average citizens weighed in against Senate Bill 1062. Many took to social media to criticize the bill, calling it an attack on gay and lesbian rights.

Time to boycott Arizona.
The c**ze.
Bye, Jan.
Jan Brewer will go down as a spineless homosexual ganglia. What a joke she was. They will not TRUMP GOD. Leviticus tells us what to do in the face of abomination.
God is in charge, I’m not worried, just pissed!
Who is surprised?
The threat to move the Superbowl elsewhere was just too powerful to let go ....
Brewer shows that she opposes the First Amendment in her veto of this bill. The next stage of this slippery slope is to force a God-fearing doctor to perform an abortion. The bill was a stand for freedom and liberty and was based upon the Eternal, Inerrant Word of God.
I guess Religious people of all faiths just need to get over their religious beliefs. Gays have all rights.....nobody else has any.
Absolutely pathetic.
Is there really a reason to legalize something that was legal in the first place?
No Thanks Jan!

This isn’t the first time that Jan Brewer could have done something worthwhile and blew it.
Hopefully you people in Arizona will start removing the spineless from your elective offices.
On a policy level, it would not have mattered because the same federal courts that are imposing gay marriage are also going to require the public celebration of gay marriage. How soon? As fast as this is moving, it might be next week.
We all knew she would buckle the minute she started buckling on Obamacare and started backing down to Obama on immigration.
Sorry if your kid (I mean that rhetorically) is a sodomite...but that is still perverted.
This is a not new issue (or a progressive issue)...it has been around forever...and the sodomites always lose.
And why do they lose? Because it is a perversion of nature.
And I'm done with the NFL. They can go piss up a rope.
All media outlets allowed it to be labeled “the anti-gay bill”.
It really was an anti-religious discrimination bill.
Jan Brewer has just said its ok to sue committed believers in Arizona.
I don’t know AZ law. But a previous thread on this issue had indicated that AZ legislature can override governor veto with 2/3 vote, probably each House.
This is only the beginning. In time each and every one of these godless pols will be stepping down and running for cover.
Good thing we already have freedom of religion in the Constitution.
If judges decide to take that freedom away, then I guess believers will need to have strong faith and be prepared for persecution.
