As a group of students begins studying for a calculus exam, a white student turns to an Asian peer and says, Hey, would you mind helping me solve this problem? Its really difficult, but you can probably do it. The Asian student agrees to help, but for some reason feels uncomfortable with the way the question was asked.
Is the Asian student being oversensitive? Was the white student subtly and subconsciously displaying racial prejudice against Asians? Could both be true?
According to Dr. Derald Sue, a professor of psychology at Columbia University, the Asian student may have been the victim of a microaggression an everyday slight, putdown, indignity, or invalidation unintentionally directed toward a marginalized group.
Sue has been researching microaggression since 2007 and has written two books on the subject. According to him, the person delivering the microaggression often does not know hes doing it and might even think he is complimenting the other individual....

this nonsense started about 5 years ago when ethics training began warning about “micro-inequities”.
It broadens the range of potential complaints from the perpetually offended crowds.
So, careful with those “looks” and facial expressions, because as long as they’re not approving and smiling, they are likely “micro-aggresions”......
And we need smart people to tell us that we are offended. Or offending. Because we're not smart enough to know.
The essence of the article is that you dare not have an opinion about anything without first checking to see if your opinion is approved.
Alec Torres is a William F. Buckley Fellow at the National Review Institute.
Maybe I'm obtuse but I saw no evidence that the writer disagreed with the premise. Which means its a sad end for National Review. I can't believe this guy is a "William F Buckley Fellow".
According to this definition: guilty.
Dr. Derald Sue is waaayyy overpaid.
little souls, little slights?
to be fair, we as the usa do seem to be heading towards the little souls side of the spectrum. even on fr, things can get unbelievably petty.
The “Death by a thousand paper cuts” theory.
Boy, you got that right! As if there aren’t enough legitimate reasons to take offense, this libtard has to invent another. Soon we’ll be too sensitive to be with any other human and will have to have our own private cubicles.
When I took pharmaco-kinetics I needed a little help. My friend from Thailand was an absolute wizard with the course. I asked for help studying. He graciously did help. Does that make me a micro-racist or worse? He also drank my Cognac.
This insane crap needs to stop!
I had a similar experience in graduate school. I had a friend from India.
We would talk about chemical engineering problems we had. He helped me on setting up experiments sometimes and I helped him with computer programming. I never noticed we were hurling insults at each other, but we both got degrees.
I think Dr. Sue is just pi$$ed off at the world because he has a girl’s name...
Good point. I helped an elderly woman reach a case of bottled water and placed it in her shopping cart Saturday. That old woman microprofiled me bacause I am 6’2” 195lbs. I have never felt so victimized.
securing liberal careers in social engineering, counseling, and making mountains out of molehills.
now positive stereotypes are damaging. libs can always find a way to make a good thing, awful.
I’m guilty of Macro-aggression.
I thought the white student asked the Asian student for Math assistance because Asian kids are smarter than white kids.
A fantasy? A miracle? Uncle Tomming?
While you're down there, would please hand me up a can of beans off the bottom shelf, while I get yours down?
Why not go back to segregating schools and get rid of Co-ed in an attempt to prevent Micro-aggression? Can’t have people implying anything at all. Might be “offensive”. Let’s cut out children’s tongues as well. That’ll do it.
Me too.
The marginalized gun-owning group has been exercising remarkable restraint.
I know me too... my lifes theme comes to mind ...you know the song... “Oh Lord, it’s hard to be humble” ... oh wait was I micro-aggressing you?
Arghhh... I read some of her crap once and felt mentally contaminated by the craziness of it for the rest of the day.
