Lightning has broken a finger off the right hand of Christ the Redeemer statue in Rio de Janeiro.
Father Omar, rector of the shrine that holds the statue, told the Globo radio station that lightning frequently strikes the nearly 100-foot tall statue, a symbol of Rio that overlooks the Brazilian city from the peak of the Corcovado mountain.
Its right hand had been damaged sometime ago, but the finger finally broke off in a storm late Thursday.

What a truly amazing experience that had to be.
Would love to see the statue but Rio’s so crime-ridden I doubt I’ll ever go.
I went there in the summer of 1977 on a South America deployment. A work up of sorts before deploying that fall to the Med Sea. RIO wasn't too bad then. Salvador {the city in Brazil not the country named such} was a different story. You had to really watch the street orphans real close or they would slice your ankle open robbing you. They would sneak up from behind and put the knife right at the tendons. I'm talking very young kids single digit age living in the streets with no parents. That's what a moral collapse looks like.
Thank you.
Watching the repairs will be interesting, I admit that.
“When Christ decides to cleanse the world with more vigor, however, it’s not going to be pretty. We sit about doing our day-to-day activities as He’s about ready to blow His top, because of all our senseless, murdering, unrepentant sin. Myself, I’ve been upping my adoration time, trying to save the lives (souls!) of my kids, myself, my hubby (he doesn’t need any help, but what the heck; he gets prayed for anyway) and all we hold dear.”
We’re very close; I wonder just what it will take to end up pushing Him over the edge.
Were very close; I wonder just what it will take to end up pushing Him over the edge.Good question; I'd like to think we have years and years left with only intermittent "correction" from Christ, but... it seems we can't be much more insulting to Him than we are today.
Barack Obama happened.
Ya, something big is coming, Jesus is going to return. Be ready, be watching.

Hmmm, Saint Peter’s last year and now this...both Catholic.
Only with the assistance of peyote......
Apparently, relations between various Deities have deteriorated of late.
As I’ve understood it, some of the worst danger in Rio now is exactly what you described, crime by street orphans. How sad is that? And, of course, terrifying for a tourist.
This would have been most appropriate and would have put Corpus Christi on the map- but the rats voted the proposal down.
In 1995, Kent Ullberg completed ``It is I,'' a 15-foot beautiful bronze sculpture depicting Jesus on a boat stilling the storm, as described in the New Testament. The work stands in front of First United Methodist Church and did not encounter the same opposition as other projects because it was built on church property instead of public land.

Very sad. And the war on the family {programs wise} that was started by LBJ if not addressed will send us down the same path. Life has already been devalued in both children and elderly in the U.S.
