'Give diplomacy a chance,' Obama says to Senate on Iran deal ["MY preference is....."]

President Obama urged Congress on Monday to "give diplomacy a chance," imploring lawmakers to hold off on additional sanctions against Iran as negotiators seek to take advantage of a six-month interim deal.

"It's going to be difficult, it's going to be challenging, but ultimately this is how diplomacy should work," Obama said, adding that the negotiating window formalized over the weekend should give world powers "the time and space" they need to formalize a permanent deal with Tehran.

"My preference is for peace and diplomacy, and this is one of the reasons why I've sent the message to Congress that now is not the time for us to impose new sanctions, now is the time for us to allow the diplomats and technical experts to do their work," Obama said.

Under the deal with Iran, the U.S. is loosening economic sanctions in exchange for a freeze to aspects of its nuclear program. Weapons inspectors will also be granted greater access to Iranian facilities.

But a bipartisan group of senators, including more than a dozen Democrats, has said it wants to pass legislation that would ramp up penalties on Iran if it fails to strike a long-term deal.

Sen. Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.) and Foreign Relations Committee Chairman Bob Menendez (D-N.J.) are among those backing a bill that would impose penalties on banks and companies that help Iran export more oil and blacklist certain Iranian industries if Tehran does not agree to a comprehensive nuclear agreement.

Over the weekend, Obama said in a statement he would veto that legislation and that the bill endangered negotiations with Iran.

And on Monday, press secretary Jay Carney said Congress should wait to evaluate Iran's seriousness, rather than potentially disrupt the process.

“We believe we have the opportunity to test whether or not this can be resolved between the international community and Iran peacefully, which is the preferred way it would be resolved,” Carney said.

Iran is a state sponsor of terrorism, working to get nuclear bombs and Obama wants to "give diplomacy a chance." They want to wipe Israel off the map.

Meanwhile we're standing in lines to take off our belts and shoes, X-rayed, having our phones and computers tapped, our returning service members are called potential domestic terrorists and this bozo wants to give Iran a pass and "give peace a chance?"

My gut is that if Obama wants something, we should do the opposite.

It’s a liberal fantasy that really bad people who want to kill you can be reasoned with and that they’re only mad at you because of George Bush, or America being evil, or something that we, or the West, or Britain did in (pick-a-date.)

They believe that now that they’re here and they’re so cool that they can talk anybody into doing anything they want. After all, the problems are due to people who were not them making decisions they’d never have made.

...what are we to think of a President who treats common Americans like hardened criminals and terror loving rogue states like Iran with kid gloves?

Joyful time in Iran. At the very most they have agreed to stop enriching uranium but their entire nuclear infrastructure remains intact. It can be reactivated anytime. Meanwhile they get relief from sanctions, their economy improves and political support for the theocratic regime may increase. The mullahs have played Obama well and have won a strategic victory.

As though the last 10 years don't count as an evaluation period

Iran is not only “a” state sponsor of Islamic terrorism, it remains the top example of same. They not only want to wipe Israel off the map; they intend to go after the “Great Satan” (USA) eventually (they didn’t buy ICBMs and invest in Mexican-border-crossing Hezbollah agents for nothing). As for diplomacy:
Diplomacy without force of arms is like music without instruments.

— Frederick the Great
Iran laughs at the weak platitudes that are being substituted for actual diplomacy. They own the UN, too.

We have tried diplomacy for decades. All we have to show for it is a near-nuclear Iran that would just love to use a nuclear weapon on Israel or the US.

They didn’t trick or outmaneuver Obama. He was going to give in to them from the beginning.

“They hate us a lot because of the decadence of the left.”

They might have a variety of reasons but the real reason is Isla is the religion of hate. They even hate each other.

The Iranians are going to pull something that will deep-six both this "agreement" and these "negotiations" as well as the Obama "presidency". Thanks Cincinatus' Wife.

Either Obama is a complete moron who knows nothing at all about the art of diplomacy or he and his handlers are working against the house, that is the U.S. White House that exists for the good of the American people.

If somebody told Barack Obama and John Kerry that Iran does not allow gay marriage, and that Iranian homosexuals are treated worse than blacks in the Jim Crow-era South, I am sure they will drop their negotiated settlement like a hot potato, and become veritable bloodhawks where Iran is concerned.
