Ford's Global VP/Marketing and Sales, Jim Farley, said something both sinister and obvious during a panel discussion about data privacy today at CES, the big electronics trade show in Las Vegas.
Because of the GPS units installed in Ford vehicles, Ford knows when its drivers are speeding, and where they are while they're doing it.
Farley was trying to describe how much data Ford has on its customers, and illustrate the fact that the company uses very little of it in order to avoid raising privacy concerns: "We know everyone who breaks the law, we know when you're doing it. We have GPS in your car, so we know what you're doing. By the way, we don't supply that data to anyone," he told attendees.
Rather, he said, he imagined a day when the data might be used anonymously and in aggregate to help other marketers with traffic related problems. Suppose a stadium is holding an event; knowing how much traffic is making its way toward the arena might help the venue change its parking lot resources accordingly, he said.

The key here is understanding that these people don’t care what you think.
Because you can’t do anything about it....and they are right.
Yet another reason to buy used...

I’ll bet the farm that if you don’t make your car payments to Ford Motor Credit that GPS info will be relayed to all repo trucks in your general vicinity.
Government mandated ODB requirements.
We’ve been talking about this since around 2000. And now it’s an issue?
There is a reason why my next vehicle may very well be a mid-70’s 4x4...
Won’t work. Once the GPS is required, like the black boxes, your car will fail to run if you disable them. And it *will* be a federal offense to tamper with them.
Remember catalytic converters?
So Ford knows when I'm driving 55mph in a 25 mph zone which is only half a mile?
Some day soon we will be getting tax bills from the government for the number of miles we have driven and how much “carbon pollution” we have emitted followed by a summons from local law enforcement for speeding violations. George Orwell could not have imagined how much the government is actually keeping track of us all. It is ironic that the touchstone of liberal thinking, Roe vs. Wade, was based on the assumption of constitutionally guaranteed right to privacy.
Not to worry. If those Ford GPS units are as effective and efficient as the Ford Sync systems that Ford has used for years....
We have nothing to worry about
Does that mean if mine is stolen I can ask them and they will help find it?
And .. this is why I opted for repairing my old car and not buying a new one.
And .. why I turn off the GPS in my mobile phone. I do turn it on if I make LONG trips into unfamiliar territory - just for my safety.
“let me just say this - Hammer time because that is exactly what will happen to my GPS whether they try to pull an Obamacare on this issue too. “
Yes but the other 999 out of a thousand won’t.
Time to buy and invest in GPS blockers.
The GPS positioning data (at minimum) is used by law enforcement today. The GPS tracking in Aaron Hernadez' smart phone and from is rental car were used to put him at the crime scene and put him in the vehicle that was at the crime scene. Seems maybe they found a gun or brass in the car?
Making all this sensor data useful is what a lot of the talk about "big data" is about. Between your smartphone, blackbox in your car, credit card receipts, other? - you won't be able to take a leak without leaving footprints in sensors somewhere.
I’m going to marry my car so it can’t testify against me.
Cloaked in the global warming talking points, Cash for clunker program removed (nudged) many of the older cars from the market
At least some GM models have have had them for a few years now. Other manufacturers may have also.
The local Sheriff's office wrecked a Tahoe 3 years ago. They got the black box out from under the driver's seat to find out if the deputy was driving too fast or otherwise dangerously. Apparently the law enforcement video system wasn't turned on at the time.
well I love Mustangs too, but good old Ford was a Nazi and now we learn his company is secretly spying on us (all this under the new IslamoNazi regime in WashDC)
hey, you younger people.. you’re gonna have to live, or die, under all this. The new Brown Shirts are being hired and trained as you read this, and armed to the teeth too, and they will have computer dossiers on every single thing you’ve ever said, done, typed, or written, and also your medical records, your financial records, your tax records, your legal records, everything.
Enjoy, my young friends. I’m nearly out of here already, its all yours now....
(so sorry my generation let this happen to you!!!!!!)
