Original post (December 30) -- Around 9:30 a.m. on December 7, University of Minnesota-Duluth student Alyssa Jo Lommel, 19, was found nearly frozen to death on a neighbor's porch. She'd apparently spent the entire night outside while temperatures dropped as low as 17 below zero.

THE BACKSTORY: UMD student Alyssa Jo Lommel tweeted about tequila shots before she was found freezing

More than three weeks later, Lommel remains hospitalized. Her condition has been upgraded to fair, but according to her family, doctors still haven't told her how bad her injuries are.

Her doctor "felt that today it would be good to just tell her about the amputations,"

The doctor "also told her how lucky she was just to be alive, but I really don't think any of that sunk in," Teri Lommel continued. "It took her several minutes before she looked at any of us. Then she started to slowly cry."

Might I add to your comment: it is one thing to have no sympathy. It is quite another to brag about no sympathy.

She went out and did it deliberately, she tweeted about it, celebrating it... when did any of this become a mistake?

Your question answers itself. I would have expected better of you, GL.

There are worse hypocrisies in Christendom, but still it’s by the grace of God that they go on as well as they do. Some hardly bother with the covenant and some are very legalistic about it. Personally I see a covenant as superfluous. Be Christian and that covers everything else.

Actually research shows that:

Teens with parents who are drunks drink the most.

Teens with abstinent parents drink the next most.

Teens with moderate drinking parents who drink in celebration and have been taught at home to drink responsibly drink the least and have the least problems with alcohol.

As I pointed out. She seems to have played the part of the “simple” fool who continues on and is punished. There are worse ways to be foolish and one of them is self righteousness.

I know it.

I just grew up neck deep in legalist gone wild. So I have a special affinity to the subject.

I find the Bible simple when I read it. Then I go to church to get confused.

Your wrong on the spelling of judgement—either spelling is acceptable (when I see the e, I have to restrain my red pen). Otherwise, unless the person has had her education completely neglected with regards to alcohol and its effects, you are right. The outcome was not deliberately willed, but the cause was—play stupid games, win stupid prizes.

Well, those like us who have found faith in the school of hard knocks should try to share it. Sometimes we encounter brick walls. And then we understand why the hard knocks have to happen.

I did a few dangerous and stupid things when I was a girl but none of them involved alcohol and below 0 temperature. How awful for her to lose her hands and more because she was stupid. She has my sympathy.

They need to offer her more tequila shots.

What a cold hearted thing to say.

Believe it or not, many of the comments at the article are much crueler and colder than here.

People do these things to themselves. She got drunk, underage, and now has to live with the consequences.

Yes, she does. I am so grateful I've escaped consequences for a lot of foolish, stupid, immoral, immature, asinine, dangerous, irresponsible things I've done. By God's grace I am a tad wiser.

This girl's situation is sad and unfortunate.

So you think that amputation is an appropriate price to pay for the folly of underage drinking?

Seriously?

Also, if push came to shove... sins of omission are probably worse for a church’s life. It’s harder for God to correct something you aren’t doing at all, rather than something you are doing, but doing the wrong way. I believe the SBC does manage to robustly affirm the glory of God in salvation, and that’s why they are being blessed so.
