Original post (December 30) -- Around 9:30 a.m. on December 7, University of Minnesota-Duluth student Alyssa Jo Lommel, 19, was found nearly frozen to death on a neighbor's porch. She'd apparently spent the entire night outside while temperatures dropped as low as 17 below zero.

THE BACKSTORY: UMD student Alyssa Jo Lommel tweeted about tequila shots before she was found freezing

More than three weeks later, Lommel remains hospitalized. Her condition has been upgraded to fair, but according to her family, doctors still haven't told her how bad her injuries are.

Her doctor "felt that today it would be good to just tell her about the amputations,"

The doctor "also told her how lucky she was just to be alive, but I really don't think any of that sunk in," Teri Lommel continued. "It took her several minutes before she looked at any of us. Then she started to slowly cry."

I'm sure she doesn't feel lucky to be alive. The whole thing is sad.

I know I'll get slammed for this but I don't care...I have *no* sympathy for this girl.I'd have *enormous* sympathy for her if her plight began with a slip on the ice,a bad blow to the head (causing confusion...or worse) and *thnn* the exposure to extreme temps. But tequila shots? like I said...*no* sympathy.

Heartbreaking to think of telling that news to a 19 year old little girl. She made a mistake that lots of people make and it bit her badly. And her friends were idiots too.

Amazing how this generation drops off people and hasn’t embraced the social nicety of watching them till they get safely in the door.
Very rough.

My heart goes out to this poor girl. I committed plenty of unwise acts when I was her age, some downright foolhardy. One feels immortal at 19 years. It is only by luck and the grace of heaven that I didn’t suffer any serious consequences. Let’s all have some compassion.

I just read that. The friends dropped her off on the front porch in an intoxicated state and then left her there. Probably they were not thinking clearly as well. Not a good story.

Very unfortunate, but only getting publicity because of the unique story. Had she wrecked her car driving drunk and been injured similarly, story would not have gotten beyond her locale.

Don’t be an ass. You have never made a mistake in your life? I have made plenty but never had to pay the high price this poor girl paid.

You perhaps are feeling a little Pharisaic? This world groans with grief yet you face it with a cold heart?

They need to offer her more tequila shots.

Sad ultra-liberal City Pages is posting this information from a private Caring Bridge site. Libs have no morals at all including the person who leaked this to them.

That doesn't stop me regretting the loss she is enduring. We're all human and subject to failure.

People do these things to themselves. She got drunk, underage, and now has to live with the consequences.

Maybe she can warn other kids to stay away from alcohol?

I have a friend whose brother got blind drunk in his own home one night. For some reason he decided to go outside to urinate when he passed out in the backyard. It was -7 at the time.

No one noticed for 12 hours. It took 2 days to thaw him for the autopsy, not that one was really necessary.

Is there anyone who can be sued or blamed for this? The tequila makers? Sellers?

At least she was responsible enough not to be driving and kill someone else.
