Comet Ison destroyed in Sun passage
BBC World News ^ | Nov. 28 ,2013 | BBC

Comet Ison was severely battered in its encounter with the Sun, and largely destroyed.

Telescopes saw the giant ball of ice and dust disappear behind the star, but only a dull streamer emerge.

Astronomers continued to search for the object, but it eventually became clear that the much vaunted "Comet of the Century" had gone out with a whimper.

Despite its great size, Ison was probably torn apart in the immense heat and tidal forces so close to the Sun.

My Uncle Art had a Comet. It was black. I drove it through our garage when I was six. It wasn’t a performance that brought down the house, but it sure as heck brought down the garage. Dad never let me put a car in the garage. “That’s OK, Son, just leave it in the driveway. I’ll put it in the garage.”

Some times the cultists kill themselves to join the comet. Other times the comet kills itself to join the cult. There was nothing left after the perihelion that a pair of black Nikes and a million miles of shoelaces.

You are right, it should have been named Icarus.

Kahoutek was a non-starter, but I thought Hale Bopp was neat. It was visible to the naked eye for several days.

Hale-Bopp was pretty good. I remember seeing it on the way to PT in the Army every morning when it was around. Fairly impressive. But you had to be up before dawn to see it -hint.

I just hope that one of those chunks doesn’t come back as something the human race never saw coming.

COMET ISON LIVES: Cancel the funeral. Comet ISON is back from the dead. Yesterday, Nov. 28th, Comet ISON flew through the sun’s atmosphere and appeared to disintegrate before the cameras of several NASA and ESA spacecraft. This prompted reports of the comet’s demise. Today, the comet has revived and is rapidly brightening. Visit http://spaceweather.com for images and updates.

Now it’s fading.

I don’t know if this is temporary, but it’s fading currently.

Keep an eye on it for another day. Should start to see it tomorrow morning, either way.

Just before the sun rises.

I saw a Youtube video of a large asteroid hitting the Earth with the sound track of that Pink Floyd song on it. It was awesome, and the edit work to sync the track just right to the video was excellent. Too bad they removed it.
