Did you know that eating or even talking about a peanut butter and jelly sandwich could be considered racist?
Thats right.
Apparently, its because people in some cultures dont eat sandwich bread. Verenice Gutierrez, principal of Harvey Scott K-8 School in Portland explained in and interview with the Portland Tribune:
Take the peanut butter sandwich, a seemingly innocent example a teacher used in a lesson last school year, the Tribune said.
What about Somali or Hispanic students, who might not eat sandwiches? Gutierrez asked. Another way would be to say: Americans eat peanut butter and jelly, do you have anything like that? Let them tell you. Maybe they eat torta. Or pita.
The Tribune noted that the school started the new year with intensive staff trainings, frequent staff meetings, classroom observations and other initiatives, to help educators understand their own white privilege, in order to change their teaching practices to boost minority students performance."Last Wednesday, the first day of the school year for staff, for example, the first item of business for teachers at Scott School was to have a Courageous Conversation to examine a news article and discuss the white privilege it conveys, the Tribune added.
Gutierrez completed a week-long seminar called Coaching for Educational Equity, a program the Tribune says focuses on race and how it affects life. She also serves on an administrative committee that focuses on systematic racism.
Our focus school and our Superintendents mandate that we improve education for students of color, particularly Black and Brown boys, will provide us with many opportunities to use the protocols of Courageous Conversations in data teams, team meetings, staff meetings, and conversations amongst one another, she said in a letter to staff.

Next time youre in the bread aisle at the grocery store, you may want to think twice. Sensitive liberal educators are now recommending the torta or the pita as a more culturally inclusive alternative.
Now that youve been made aware of the evil of PB&J, theres only one question left to answer: Is white bread more racist than whole wheat?

If she cared, she'd make sure that kids who are from different cultures know about the common, shared culture in the United States.
When it comes time for those kids to go out into the world, they won't have any of the experiences that other Americans do. They will be seen as "other", because they will still be "other".
Like it or not, human nature makes us seek common experiences with new people. They won't be the first choices for new hires, and possibly not for promotions or educational opportunities.
She should not be allowed to be around children until she learns that her job is not to create a school-equivalent of Disney's It's A Small World. Her job is to make sure those children are educated to the best of her ability for success in the world.
What a hateful person - manipulating children's futures for her own idiotic reasons.
If those foreigners came here, they can assimilate into our culture. If they choose not to assimilate they can leave or die (I don’t really care which as long as they do it quickly)
The Earl of Sandwich is rolling in his grave. White bread privilege. /s
“I just laugh at this crap now. It has gotten so ridiculous... its just comical at this point”
A TV sitcom with this material laced into it would be great.
Hispanics don’t eat sandwiches?
Just burritos, right?
I never even knew what a ‘burrito’ was until well into adulthood in the late 70’s................
It’s like going to an Italian restaurant and ordering Egg Foo Young. It wouldn’t expect to get it. I have been to Europe and never once thought about demanding an American style dinner in a foreign location. It’s ludicrous. When in their country, I eat what they eat, and I’d expect the same in return.................
I used to have a huge amount of respect for teachers. Not any more................
I prefer to hold onto my culture. And the PBJ figures into it.
If hispanics don’t eat sammiches why do mexican markets carry bread?
They just get stupider and stupider don’t they?
