Upton to Limbaugh: Maybe you should have ‘checked in with us’ before criticizing House delay
The Daily Caller ^ | 11/16/2013 | Jeff Poor

Posted on 11/16/2013 6:53:21 PM PST by markomalley

One of the leading critics of Michigan Republican Rep. Fred Upton’s effort to delay the onset of certain provisions of Obamacare has been conservative talk show host Rush Limbaugh.

“This would be a tone-deaf disaster if the Republican leadership lets Fred Upton ascend to the chairmanship of the House energy committee,” Limbaugh said on his radio show earlier this week. “This is exactly the kind of nannyism, statism, what have you, that was voted against and was defeated last week. No Republican complicit in nannyism, statism, can be rewarded this way.”

On Hugh Hewitt’s radio show on Friday night, Upton suggested Limbaugh check with him before launching into his criticism, pointing to the reactions from conservative groups and the media to dispute Limbaugh’s notion.

Partial transcript as follows:

HEWITT: OK, now you have tempted me into breaking my no first name rule, because I’m going to use two of them. So Fred, yesterday, Rush urged the House not to touch this, because it in essence, it’s throwing a lifeline to the President and saving a bill that’s collapsing, don’t get near it, don’t ruin the brand, go for full repeal. What’s your response to that?
UPTON: Well, a couple of things, and you know, it would have been nice if he had maybe checked in with us and gotten information. We had a lot of groups, Club for Growth and others endorse our bill. A couple of things — first of all, what do you say to those millions of people that are all of a sudden out of luck come January 1? That’s not what we ought to be doing. We ought to be thinking about those people. The other thing is I’m just looking at the headlines today, Hugh. And in The Wall Street Journal, I mean, these are headlines that are like war is over. ‘Obama Retreats On Health Rules,’ left to right, right underneath the banner. New York Times: ‘In A Reversal, Obama Moves To Avert The Cancellation Of Health Policies,’ and it’s got a pretty sour face in his picture right underneath it, right underneath the banner. USA Today: ‘Health Law Shakes Presidency,’ left to right. Washington Times: Same picture of the president, ‘The Obamacare Retreat.’ Washington Post: Picture of a — not very flattering pictures of the president, ‘Obama Offers a Insurance Fix,’ ‘And you know, that’s on me. I mean, we fumbled the rollout on this health care law.’
HEWITT: Yeah.
UPTON: We’ve done in a week’s time what a shutdown and everything else, where we didn’t have the numbers, let’s face it, to try and reverse the fix that we’re in.

As for why Upton put the delay at just a year, Upton said that was the best way to ensure it got passed.

“We wanted to pass it,” he said. “That was our objective. We wanted to provide some immediate relief to the people that were bitterly concerned about the prospects of their own plan. We thought a one year was good enough that we would not only keep most of the Republicans, and we did, but have a good chance of getting a number of Democrats as well, which we did. Remember, we won by more than 100 votes. Had we done a longer period, it might have been more of a showpiece than an actual piece that you could actually get done, and we wanted to, again, two days ago, before the president undercut us with what is in essence his executive order. We had more than 300 votes for this.”

“All Obama have to do is order the next round of cancellation letters to be mailed until mid to late November, when the Dems retake Congress because the Stupid Party gave them a lifeline.”

Impossible, people need to sign up by Dec15 to have ins come Jan1)

“Why don’t you just advocate a full repeal NOW, instead of trying to be cute and play politics with ruthless leftists?”

Because irt won’t happen, but Dems will point and say “see, they aren’t even trying to fix it”

You can get the same results and help crash the exchange this way -— with Dems voting with you!

If you can’t find a 100 watt lightbulb, blame Upton.

He’s the buffoon who wrote the law to ban incandescents.

I like it!

I call “Obamacare:” Obama’s Socialized Health Insurance Tax, or OSHIT.

Leave it to the republican party to bail the rats out of the huge mess they created. Never mind that the plan is unworkable. This Upton idiot just proved that there is only one party in DC. Scumbag.

So a bill that effectively repeals Obamacare for a year, one that has all the Progressives screaming bloody murder, well it is bad because... I don’t have a profile or something?

No, it's bad because it gives the Dems an out and a chance to pin this on the Republicans. If the delay was so wonderful, why didn't the Dims take it during the shutdown?

Effectivly Obamacare, instead saying any policy offered before Oct1 can be offered to anyone(!) for 2014

Do you run an insurance company, or a business?
There will be significant time and money sunk trying to renegotiate the policies with the consumers, and then you're talking weeks getting it approved through the state commissioners.
It's better for the insurance companies to keep the cancelled, since they DID abide by "the law" to make them compliant.

All pre-existing condition people will go to exchanges

No, they would probably go to Medicaid, and if they don't qualify, then they're screwed.

all healthy people woild be able to buy cheap plans from ins cos (which they would sale since its better then having no signups from the exchange)

Those new policies would still have to be ACA-compliant. So you're right back to square one.

Then in Aug-Oct 2014, all those plans are again cancelled, and Dems are again in panic mode

Then in Aug-Oct 2014, Obama will order the insurance companies not to mail cancellation letters until mid-late November 2014.

Meanwhile, 2015 costs on exchange skyrocket because no one signed up gor the exchange

Still forgetting about the employer plans that will be cancelled as well.

“Upton’s bill is only for the individual plans. What does his bill do for the massive Employer plans that are going to get cancelled next year?”

Uptons bill allows ANYONE to buy catastrophic-type plans, wether they were previous purchasers off the individual market or not. That would mean all Emp-Plans that were cancelled would see t heir employees be able to buy old “junk” plans and ensure next to no one lands on the exchanges (which will ensure the dwath spiral)

Like I said, there is not 1 single negative about this bill... but everyone here os ranting against it... why?

A technical point from an insurance agent:

All Obamacare plans can be purchased “on exchange” or “off exchange”

The ACA qualified “off exchange” plans are identical to the “on exchange” plans but so far they do not qualify for any subsidy.

(interesting point, the smartest way for Obama to deal with some of this mess is to allow people to take the “tax credit” or “subsidy” on their 2014 Form 1040 tax return, but then he would have to admit defeat on the website issues)

Yay, the bill accomplished nothing, gave 39 Democrats cost-free cover to now say they voted to keep Obama’s promise, and if the bill had passed, we would have delayed lots of bad effects of Obamacare until after the election. Unbelievably stupid move.

Geez, you're an idiot.

Because irt won’t happen, but Dems will point and say “see, they aren’t even trying to fix it”

I'm not interested in taking the scenic route and trying to play politics with leftist thugs to get brownie points from the media. There is a simple solution that the Republicans should have done post-shutdown:

(1) Repeal Obamacare
(2) Dems refuse, then Obamacare must be fully implemented per the F'ing law!

No waivers, handouts, exemptions for anyone. That means Barky on down must sign up for Zerocare.
Obama refuses, then impeachment proceedings must be filed because he is in violation of his own law!!

Appreciate your feistiness!

But: “it will throw a wrench into the risk pool on the exchange”- that’s the problem.

Voters will want that made whole by the taxpayers. The Dems’ ads in 2014 will be “Republicans want to cut your healthcare!”.
Every government ‘freebie’ starts off underfunded, in confidence that voters will later demand enough to pay for it.

And this is why the Libertarian Party will never amount to jack sh!t.

The Left controls the media. Any collaboration with the Dems on this, and when it collapses it will be ultimately as spun as the "Republicans' fault." Hell, they're already claiming this thing is falling apart because NO Republicans supported it to begin with, and you want to give them a leg up. Please.
