Upton to Limbaugh: Maybe you should have ‘checked in with us’ before criticizing House delay
The Daily Caller ^ | 11/16/2013 | Jeff Poor

Posted on 11/16/2013 6:53:21 PM PST by markomalley

One of the leading critics of Michigan Republican Rep. Fred Upton’s effort to delay the onset of certain provisions of Obamacare has been conservative talk show host Rush Limbaugh.

“This would be a tone-deaf disaster if the Republican leadership lets Fred Upton ascend to the chairmanship of the House energy committee,” Limbaugh said on his radio show earlier this week. “This is exactly the kind of nannyism, statism, what have you, that was voted against and was defeated last week. No Republican complicit in nannyism, statism, can be rewarded this way.”

On Hugh Hewitt’s radio show on Friday night, Upton suggested Limbaugh check with him before launching into his criticism, pointing to the reactions from conservative groups and the media to dispute Limbaugh’s notion.

Partial transcript as follows:

HEWITT: OK, now you have tempted me into breaking my no first name rule, because I’m going to use two of them. So Fred, yesterday, Rush urged the House not to touch this, because it in essence, it’s throwing a lifeline to the President and saving a bill that’s collapsing, don’t get near it, don’t ruin the brand, go for full repeal. What’s your response to that?
UPTON: Well, a couple of things, and you know, it would have been nice if he had maybe checked in with us and gotten information. We had a lot of groups, Club for Growth and others endorse our bill. A couple of things — first of all, what do you say to those millions of people that are all of a sudden out of luck come January 1? That’s not what we ought to be doing. We ought to be thinking about those people. The other thing is I’m just looking at the headlines today, Hugh. And in The Wall Street Journal, I mean, these are headlines that are like war is over. ‘Obama Retreats On Health Rules,’ left to right, right underneath the banner. New York Times: ‘In A Reversal, Obama Moves To Avert The Cancellation Of Health Policies,’ and it’s got a pretty sour face in his picture right underneath it, right underneath the banner. USA Today: ‘Health Law Shakes Presidency,’ left to right. Washington Times: Same picture of the president, ‘The Obamacare Retreat.’ Washington Post: Picture of a — not very flattering pictures of the president, ‘Obama Offers a Insurance Fix,’ ‘And you know, that’s on me. I mean, we fumbled the rollout on this health care law.’
HEWITT: Yeah.
UPTON: We’ve done in a week’s time what a shutdown and everything else, where we didn’t have the numbers, let’s face it, to try and reverse the fix that we’re in.

As for why Upton put the delay at just a year, Upton said that was the best way to ensure it got passed.

“We wanted to pass it,” he said. “That was our objective. We wanted to provide some immediate relief to the people that were bitterly concerned about the prospects of their own plan. We thought a one year was good enough that we would not only keep most of the Republicans, and we did, but have a good chance of getting a number of Democrats as well, which we did. Remember, we won by more than 100 votes. Had we done a longer period, it might have been more of a showpiece than an actual piece that you could actually get done, and we wanted to, again, two days ago, before the president undercut us with what is in essence his executive order. We had more than 300 votes for this.”

I’m sick of repubs bitching about Uptons bill - it effectively completely repeals Obamacare for 1 year (allowing everyone to buy non-Exchange plans), and is a bill that would stand a good chance of continually getting reupped as the law disintegrates.

I can see that you've had a vast amount of experience upon which to base this opinion of yours.

Hint: Free Republic isn't a warehouse of GOPe sycophants.

What "non-exchange plans?"

Those plans are DEAD.
Do you think insurance companies (after they have to get approved again through their respective state regulator) are going to renew the plans, knowing that they will get cancelled again next fall?

and is a bill that would stand a good chance of continually getting reupped as the law disintegrates

Upton's bill is only for the individual plans.
What does his bill do for the massive Employer plans that are going to get cancelled next year?

If you don't know this you're either a democrat are stupid enough to be in the running. Some 5 million Americans have already lost their insurance as the law required.

I cancelled my insurance on my own (will not renew) as 1.) my company-provided policy is ridiculous in price even with the company paying half, and 2.) I refuse to allow my government to tell me what provisions I must make for contingencies that pertain to my life.

How the people of this country are willing to sacrifice freedom and prosperity for the fake promise of a cushy life under medical care is beyond me. This bamboozling has taken decades to come to light, but there it is. Good grief. Did our forefathers not enjoy a full life without health insurance? To expect medicine to give life (I understand how when used responsibly it is of great benefit) . . . that is no way to live. Same goes for fame and wealth. I’m finished with those games. I know where I came from, and where I am going. It’s that simple.

While Barry wanted to be a miracle worker and lower the seas and heal the planet, Upton wants to re-animate a mummy. There is no way to re-issue polices to the people who have been canceled. Fred “Dim-Bulb” Upton is/was wasting his time on a fell-good move that is a fool’s errand.

Forget the cancellation notices. The insurance companies aren't obligated to re-instate the plans. And they have to go through the state regulator. Several state insurance commissioners have already told Obama to pound sand. You now have uncertainty because the insurance companies aren't sure where this is leading to.

...oh yeah, Aug-Oct - you know, just like this year. That means everyone would again be getting kicked right before Midterms, and Dems would again have the same prob they have today, just on steroids!

All Obama have to do is order the next round of cancellation letters to be mailed until mid to late November, when the Dems retake Congress because the Stupid Party gave them a lifeline.

That is why I say it would likely get reupped, and likely for 2 years at that time, meaning Obamacare is effectively repealed until 2016 (and Obama would be desperately trying to keep the exchanges afloat, instead of us trying to do the opposite)

Why don't you just advocate a full repeal NOW, instead of trying to be cute and play politics with ruthless leftists?

Remember when cartoons used to use LIGHTBULBS as a sign that someone was “thinking” -— we need someone to do such a cartoon about Upton.
What IS he thinking?

You are living in a dream world.

Cancellation notices require only 30 days. They can be sent out as late as November 30th and still be in effect when 0bama's grace period (or the Republican grace period) expires. One year is nothing more than yet one more bailout.

“eliminating the cost of employee health care premiums from their income statements.”

The expense is still there and larger than ever. Their profits will be tighter, their domestic customers more miserly and their investors more demanding.
They wanted what the Dems promised them, but what they’ve gotten is horrible.

If the Republicans (I was one once but am hard core Libertarian now) had any sense, they should announce they will assist President Obama in the full implementation of Obama Care to be finalized within 6 months for everyone.

They should insist the Obamacare include Congress, Labor Unions, government workers, and retired government workers. I would exclude the military as they have been screwed over enough by Obama.

In effect this would mean the cancellation of about 100 million policies in the private sector. This would ensure the total destruction of Obama and the Democrat Party.

If you have noticed the administration is very open to delaying Obamacare but not repealing Obamacare. This means they are still intent on destroying those 100 million polices after the 2014 Congressional elections.

If Obama does not agree to this, go home and do not pass, approve or even consider an extension on the debt limit.

Obama knows how to play hardball. It is time the wimp party, also known as the Republican Party, grow a set of balls.

ps
Make sure John McCain get back on his meds. Otherwise, he and the other RINOS will again snatch defeat from the jaws of victory.

Huh?

So a bill that effectively repeals Obamacare for a year, one that has all the Progressives screaming bloody murder, well it is bad because... I don’t have a profile or something?

Again,

Effectivly Obamacare, instead saying any policy offered before Oct1 can be offered to anyone(!) for 2014

All pre-existing condition people will go to exchanges, but since the webpage doesn’t work, all healthy people woild be able to buy cheap plans from ins cos (which they would sale since its better then having no signups from the exchange)

Then in Aug-Oct 2014, all those plans are again cancelled, and Dems are again in panic mode

Meanwhile, 2015 costs on exchange skyrocket because no one signed up gor the exchange

...seriously, where is even 1 problem with the bill outside of the hyperbole “he must be a rino, get him!!!! 1!!” Witchunt stuff?

Because I can honestly not see even one negative aspect in it (but the positives are extreme, which is why Pelosi is calling it a “poisoned pill” and Obama desperately tried to get out in front of it to try and stop the vote/support)

Really, I think people upset with the bill are thinking with blind to rage or something since all logical thought would say it would be a devastating blow to Obamacare and huge win for Repubs (hence all voting for it)

All they have to do is order Obama to repeal the law . . .

Law? What law? What we have is a morphing mash of edicts from a pseudo king subject to adjustment at whim, throwing both public and private business into chaos. It's way past time for impeachment.
