The Ku Klux Klan was formed as a social club by a group of Confederate Army veterans in Pulaski, Tennessee in the winter of 1865-66. The group adopted the name Ku Klux Klan from the Greek word "kyklos," meaning circle, and the English word clan. In the summer of 1867, the Klan became the "Invisible Empire of the South" at a convention in Nashville, Tennessee attended by delegates from former Confederate states. The group was presided over General Nathan Bedford Forrest, who is believed to have been the first Grand Wizard -- the title for the head of the organization.

Lincoln would be a Republican trying to get blacks off the Democrat plantation. The welfare-industrial state has destroyed the once thriving black family, destroyed or stopped the normalization of black culture, and eliminated the economic/educational prospects of blacks. I’d include government schools as part of the welfare state. Learn the history, the true history of the post civil war era.

The Klan penetrated both parties in Colorado in the 1920's, but most deeply into the Republicans. In 1924 they elected a nominally Republican Senator and Governor. It was a rather brief era and both were turned out in the next election. A multiple term Democrat Mayor of Denver, Ben Stapleton, began his career with Klan affiliations and support.

Strongly Republican El Paso County (Colorado Springs), backed by Republican leaders, kept the Klan out.

The Klan hold on Indiana was largely a power move by the local leader, D.C. Stephenson. He was a real piece of work. Anyway, the Klan in the 20s was less worried about about blacks than immigrants and Catholics.

I spent a week in law school studying the Stephenson case. His kidnapping, rape and torture of a young woman and her resulting suicide is one of the seminal cases establishing “depraved heart murder” (or “extreme indifference” to deadly danger) as a second degree homicide crime. After his conviction the Indiana Klan rapidly declined.
