WASHINGTON (AP) - House Speaker John Boehner planned to ask fractious Republican lawmakers on Thursday to support a six-week extension of the government's ability to borrow money, even as Treasury Secretary Jacob Lew warned Congress of "irrevocable damage" that an unprecedented federal default would risk.

Boehner, R-0hio, was expected to broach the plan at a private morning meeting of GOP House legislators, just hours before he and other Republican leaders were traveling to the White House to discuss their budget battle with President Barack Obama.

There will be no default. Moody's explained it succinctly. More theater at our expense.

So is the media explicitly lying in attempt to get Boehner to do this, or did Boehner fold?

If the ‘pubs stand firm on not funding Obamacare, the six-week extension allowing the debt limit to be raised is a good idea. If Obama rejects it, he caused whatever mayham he might initiate. If Obama accepts it and keeps doing stupid stuff, his administration becomes more of a joke every day.

Lew is a political hack. A lightweight party apparatchick, not a serious or credible voice on economic matters. He’s going to tow the party line every time.

I agree.

Lets keep the battle focused on domestic issues. No need to involve China right now.

The media wants everyone to believe that not raising the U.S. debt limit will result in default and world economic collapse.

come one people this is just more scare tactics to get the Republicans to cave. Don’t give in Republicans . don’t believe the media .

the media cried wolf with global warming, sequester, gov shutdown, fiscal cliff bs, etc. etc. that are all imaginary hobgoblins

don’t believe the media who are practically all registered democrats

don’t raise the debt limit. keep the useless government shut down

Correct.

Default is impossible, given the revenues coming in.

Coming from AP there’s no way of telling what’s really going on given their liberal sympathies, but Republicans do have a way of snatching defeat from the jaws of victory.

I disagree.

Not raising the debt ceiling gives the DNC/MSM another front to widen the political war we are fighting. This will diminish the battles we are winning with respect to the shut down.

Then there’s only symbolism in raising the debt limit.

Good move on the GOPs part. Makes them look flexible and willing to horsetrade (when they don’t really need to), further highlighting that it’s the Dems who are being intransigent. Plus it keeps the focus on the shutdown and Obamacare, preventing the Dems from distracting by crying out “defeult!”

The budget is what needs to be resolved. The debt limit is sort of the emergency brake for the government.

Removing the emergency brake is not a solution.

Stop with the continuing resolutions and come up with a budget that is within our means.

It’s just putting off the battle. Might as well have it now as 6 weeks from now. For 6 weeks, they should say, ok, but accept appropriations bills for defense and one or two other agencies.
