Sowell: Inarticulate Republicans
Creators Syndicate ^ | October 8, 2013 | Thomas Sowell

Posted on 10/07/2013 10:09:38 AM PDT by jazusamo

If the continued existence of mathematics depended on the ability of the Republicans to defend the proposition that two plus two equals four, that would probably mean the end of mathematics and of all the things that require mathematics.

Republican Speaker of the House of Representatives, John Boehner, epitomized what has been wrong with the Republicans for decades when he emerged from a White House meeting last Wednesday, went over to the assembled microphones, briefly expressed his disgust with the Democrats' intransigence and walked on away.

We are in the midst of a national crisis, immediately affecting millions of Americans and potentially affecting the kind of country this will become if ObamaCare goes into effect — and yet, with multiple television network cameras focused on Speaker Boehner as he emerged from the White House, he couldn't be bothered to prepare a statement that would help clarify a confused situation, full of fallacies and lies.

Boehner was not unique in having a blind spot when it comes to recognizing the importance of articulation and the need to put some serious time and effort into presenting your case in a way that people outside the Beltway would understand. On the contrary, he has been all too typical of Republican leaders in recent decades.

When the government was shut down during the Clinton administration, Republican leaders who went on television to tell their side of the story talked about "OMB numbers" versus "CBO numbers" — as if most people beyond the Beltway knew what these abbreviations meant or why the statistics in question were relevant to the shutdown. Why talk to them in Beltway-speak?

When Speaker Boehner today goes around talking about the "CR," that is just more of the same thinking — or lack of thinking. Policy wonks inside the Beltway know...

That’s pretty much what I’ve seen.

The GOP is staffed with a bunch of people who, while well-intentioned, aren’t the brightest people. And about mathematics, they’re just like the vast majority of Americans: Flat-out stupid.

Boehner doesn’t know what he believes either.

I totally agree. The GOP just don’t understand how to message worth a damn even when their opponent has a rhetorical target on their back. I think in the future if you can’t talk yourself out of a paper bag then you shouldn’t be considered for a leadership role. I miss Gingrich and Tom Delay they could really take advantage of a microphone.

Mr. Speaker please explain the lie that the paying the interest on the debt has anything to do with raising the debt ceiling. It is a lie and needs to be exposed.

They are plenty bright. They just have no idea / no wanting to communicate their thoughts in a way the bulk of people can relate to.

The two ideas are not mutually exclusive....but TS is right, there is a lot of bubble isolation among them, and they really don’t know how out of touch they are with the universe outside the beltway.

Totally agree...As usual Sowell nails this and it simply boils down to getting the message out that’s understandable to common people. Boehner and many other Republicans should be taking lessons from Sowell.

In general you are correct. But please exclude Ted Cruz from that generalization. He nailed it on Sunday with Candy WhatsHerName.

Republicans need flat out, fearlessly, and flawlessly to articulate the Cloward-Piven agenda, exposing the red diaper babies, their goons, and their useful idiots for who and what they are. The current administration is acting in direct contravention of the Constitution they swore to uphold and defend. They must be held strictly accountable.

Yet another right-on-the-mark piece by Thomas Sowell.

For the love of God, is there no Winston Churchill out there willing to speak for our side? Apparently not.

lib message: Free stuff until we run out.

Conservative message: stuff you have to work for but we have plenty.

It is our message they reject, not the methodology.

How about this. The House passes a new tax. It is called the Debt Tax. It is a head tax. The governments takes the current debt cost and divides by the number of adults. EVERYONE pays their share!

Based on 200,000,000 adults that would be roughly $2,080.00 per year.

I suspect that people would be demanding action on the debt very quickly.

Sowell for prez (although he’s far too smart to even consider taking the job).

The Obamadork for sewer cleaner (although he’s far too stupid and dirty to consider taking the job).

I think “inarticulate” is a polite way of saying, cowards.
