Sen. John McCain appears cautiously optimistic that the House of Representatives will ultimately pass some kind of immigration reform and says that the GOP is doomed in the 2016 presidential contest if the effort fails.
The crystal ball is a little cloudy because I think August is going to be a very seminal month, he said, pointing out that members are back interacting with constituents and that a broad coalition of interest groups back comprehensive immigration reform.
Mr. McCain was part of a bipartisan group that helped get a comprehensive bill through the Democratic-controlled Senate, while leaders of the Republican-led House say they plan to approach the issue in a more step-by-step manner.
In the interview with ABCs Jeff Zeleny, the Arizona Republican was shown a clip of fellow GOPSen. Ted Cruz of Texas saying there are Republicans in Washington who are scared of being beaten up politically was then played.
Mr. Cruz and a small group of others have clashed with senators like Mr. McCain over budget talks and whether Republicans should withhold support for any spending bill that includes funding to implement or enforce President Obamas health care law.
Look, Ive been a ferocious a fighter and I think as partisan, as strong, as anybody, but I really try hard not to get personal, Mr. McCain said. Debate on the issue as hard as you can, but dont say that your opponents, that people who disagree with you are scared.
Its been a long time since Ive been scared, said the Arizona Republican, who spent more than five years in captivity during the Vietnam War.
Mr. McCain said that if the party chooses Mr. Cruz or Sen. Rand Paul of Kentucky as its 2016 nominee, either will be viable.

What is he smoking and who dies he think he is kidding?
I wish I knew what McCain’s goal is, but it at least involves the destruction of the United States as a free and independent constitutional republic.
FU John McCain.
The only “immigration” I would like to see is pin-head losers like mclame immigrating to a dementia living center.
Then, to respond to the headline, we have no hope. Anyone who believes support of amnesty mitigates damage to the GOP is themself damaged in their thinking.
I’m not scared of immigrants coming through the process. I think most of them will vote liberal the first generation but will vote republican over time. I mean look at 1984 numbers...not that bad in all consideration.
But seeing how illegals are coddled by democrats and they are mostly poor and uneducated...will lead to a one-party system. Hell, I’d even be surprised if Rhinos have a spot in this country!? Conservatives would be gone in a generation.
We’d likely be a nation voting for democrats or socialists and we all know where that would lead!?

“and says that the GOP is doomed in the 2016 presidential contest if the effort fails.”
And what happens if it passes? All the sudden they’re all gonna vote GOP?
Why is that so damn hard for McCain to understand?
It’s now obvious the VietCong didn’t want McCain around either.
McCain: Immigration crucial to GOP 2016 hopes
No it is not.
What is crucial for the GOP is honesty, remaining true their principles, which means standing up to the homosexual mafia, and the ECONOMY. The American economy has SUCKED for 5 years under Obama is is not going to get any better as long as he is President regardless of the MSM lying for him. A person that was working 40 hrs with benefits at $20.00 an hour 6 years ago and is now working 32 hours with limited benefits at $14.00 KNOWS that our economy has not recovered.
Considering the range of McCain’s off the wall actions and statements in recent months - plus his previous track record... I say in all seriousness - Senile Dementia ... he is 76 years old and Senile Dementia comes along in those years. Senile Dementia (maybe even Alzheimer’s)is not just memory loss — it is also cognitive malfunction ... confusion... incoherent thinking ... Sound like John McCain to me...
I agree with him, immigration is a crucial issue. If the Republicans vote for it, then why should I vote for a Republican...that makes then the same as Demacrats. If the Republicans vote for immigration, they are voting to put the Democrats in control forever. So he is right, it is crucial for Republicans.
I really hope that last sentence didn’t require a sarcasm tag.
We do know that no functional Conservative would ally himself to Chucky Schumer on any really critical issue.
McCain is well past his Remove From Shelf date
If they vote through immigration against the will of their base, we have no choice but to either move to a third party or vote them out of office.
But since the election process has been hacked, our “leaders” in DC no longer fear elections. Politics has become professional wrestling, with the outcomes predetermined.
For now.
But the winds of change are growing, and it won’t end well for the “ruling class”.
So, who does he think will vote for the GOP if they support Amnesty?
Illegals? Even after they are amnestied it will be years until they can vote - and they go 8-1 for Democrats.
Latinos? Are they really going to think that amnestying illegals is good for them?
The truth, as far as I can tell, is that the GOP are responding to big money donors who want cheap labor subsidized by the taxpayer.
