Sen. John McCain appears cautiously optimistic that the House of Representatives will ultimately pass some kind of immigration reform and says that the GOP is doomed in the 2016 presidential contest if the effort fails.
The crystal ball is a little cloudy because I think August is going to be a very seminal month, he said, pointing out that members are back interacting with constituents and that a broad coalition of interest groups back comprehensive immigration reform.
Mr. McCain was part of a bipartisan group that helped get a comprehensive bill through the Democratic-controlled Senate, while leaders of the Republican-led House say they plan to approach the issue in a more step-by-step manner.
In the interview with ABCs Jeff Zeleny, the Arizona Republican was shown a clip of fellow GOPSen. Ted Cruz of Texas saying there are Republicans in Washington who are scared of being beaten up politically was then played.
Mr. Cruz and a small group of others have clashed with senators like Mr. McCain over budget talks and whether Republicans should withhold support for any spending bill that includes funding to implement or enforce President Obamas health care law.
Look, Ive been a ferocious a fighter and I think as partisan, as strong, as anybody, but I really try hard not to get personal, Mr. McCain said. Debate on the issue as hard as you can, but dont say that your opponents, that people who disagree with you are scared.
Its been a long time since Ive been scared, said the Arizona Republican, who spent more than five years in captivity during the Vietnam War.
Mr. McCain said that if the party chooses Mr. Cruz or Sen. Rand Paul of Kentucky as its 2016 nominee, either will be viable.

FUJM!! TRAITOR!! Is this guy an idiot or what?
I really wish McLame would retire. He’s about ten years past his due date, IMHO.
You get three guesses, and one small hint. “...or what...” is not the right answer.
:^)
BEFORE 1986 amnesty, Hispanic support to Reagan in 1984 was 37%
AFTER 1986 amnesty, Hispanic support to GHW Bush in 1988 was 31%
So, McCain... do explain HOW once again giving amnesty to illegals this helps the GOP???
McCain is a total idiot. He should be dragged out of the Senate and hogtied and dropped off in an Arizona desert.
Nail it!
Juan is a senile old coot. I’ll bet the first thing he does when he comes into the office each morning is put on a big sombrero and starts doing the Mexican hat dance a la David Steinberg on the old Smothers Brothers Show.
It’s unfortunate he ever made it into Congress.
He was sworn in January 3rd, 1983. He’s been screwing up ever since.
When you make Senator, your actions cost the nation even more if you’re a person like McStain.
Then give up hope, Juan.
I’d like to see at least ten thousand armed Humphrey Bogarts facing him, saying “You’d better not come any closer!”
John has become an embarrassment!!
Besides an idiot, he is delusional.
If this immigration bill passes our Republic will be turned into a Balkanized, third world democracy within 20 years.
The illegals overwhelmingly believe the proper role of government is to "provide" a vast array of social services and other "goodies."
McCain is truly insane.
Yes it is critical but in the opposite of what McLame wants.
Yes, it is.
Eagles may soar, but weasels don’t get sucked into jet engines. Too bad mclame is a weasel.
The only thing critical is get this lying charlatan out of the office. He nauseates me.
