In the movie “Bill and Ted’s Excellent Adventure”, Beethoven is portrayed as not speaking English. Had the producers done their homework, we would have had Beethoven speaking a quaint and very Elizabethan English, full of “thee”, “thou”, “prithee”, and Shakespearean exclamations such as, “Marry, sir!” It would have been hilarious.

Beethoven had struck a deal with London publishing firm of Boozey & Hawkes to write arrangements of English, Welsh, Scottish and Irish folk songs anonymously. B&H would send him the song manuscript, Beethoven would write the arrangement, ship it back to London, and he would receive a bank draft for gold in return. Beethoven insisted that his name not be listed as arranger. It started as hack work, but once Beethoven got into the rhythm of it, he began to apply his standards of quality to the later folk songs. It was from these songs, some going back to the 16th Century, that Beethoven learned his English.

The “Kreutzer Sonata” is named for the famous violinist who rejected the work as unplayable. That probably meant that his technique wasn’t up to snuff. The sonata was eventually premiered by the English violinist George Bridgetower, who was half black. Bridgetower was surprised to find that Beethoven’s English was fluent, but he had a hard time not laughing whenever Beethoven spoke up. That Elizabethan English spoken in a German accent was just too funny.

The finale of this sonata is a romp for the listener, but it’s tough on the performers. There is a very long and fast introduction before he finally gets around to stating the first subject in this rondo.

There is a passage where Beethoven writes a series of half notes, and if you take them at tempo, they sound slow and ponderous. A custom has arisen of taking those half notes much faster.

I asked violinist Jimmy Ehnes and his favorite accompanist, Andrew Armstrong, about this. Jimmy said, “What you’ve identified is the difference between pulse and tempo.” I felt an explosion in my head; I had just had an epiphany. Then Jimmy said, “But don’t use that. I have a copyright on it.” (Personal note to self: Write a check to Jimmy for this essay.)

The bar that precedes the half notes has its own problem. Beethoven marks the bar “f...p” in the middle without putting the “f” and “p” under specific notes. It’s as though Beethoven is saying, “Go from loud to soft, but I’m not going to tell you how to do it. Figure it out for yourself if you think you’re so smart.” Beethoven could be a real wise-ass sometimes. Martha’s solution to this technical problem in this video is quite clever.

A lot of Beethoven’s works are about struggle, particularly in their sonata development sections. After a serious introduction, here is one piece where Beethoven sits back, a fine brandy in one hand, a Havana cigar in the other – and a high-priced lady of the evening in his lap. He’s just kicking back and having a good time.

Here is a situation where Beethoven was making a statement. The famous “Ghost Trio” gets its name from the eerie and otherworldly slow movement. At the end, there is a chromatic drop on the piano that feels like someone walking on your grave.

This is an important historic video performance from the Sixties featuring Daniel Barenboim, Pinchas Zuckerman and Jacquelyn du Pre. Jackie is no longer among us due to her tragic early death from MS. Pinky and Danny were so young!
