http://www.tampabay.com/americas-worst-charities/

The Tampa Bay Times and The Center for Investigative Reporting identified the 50 worst charities in America – organizations that purport to help the needy but devote pennies on the dollar to worthy causes. These tips can help you make an informed decision when the phone rings for charity.

Key questions to ask the caller:
• What is the full name of the charity?
• Do you work for a paid fundraiser?
• How much of my donation actually goes to charity?
• Will any local programs directly benefit? If so, how?
• What is the website address of the charity?

Key facts to know:
• The best charities spend no more than 35 cents of every dollar raised on fund-raising costs.
• America’s worst charities spend more than 80 cents of every dollar on fundraising.
• Charities that use telemarketing firms and fundraisers are far more likely to receive only a fraction of the money raised.

www.ministrywatch.com

—gives 30 donor alerts, gives 30 “shining lights,” evaluation criteria, & top 20 ministries by total revenue, and more...

I don’t understand what the “risk” is. You gave with honest intentions and fulfilled your need for giving away your wealth. What have you lost?

Remember:

Save the Children

Make a Wish

United Way

are NOT ripoffs. Unscrupulous con men invent “charities” with similar sounding names to confuse donors.

This report on Charities and how much of our donations actually goes to the needy makes me wonder about political donations. Are the solicitors for political donations volunteers who receive no pay for their services or are they paid solicitors like these charities use? How much of our donations actually go to the candidate/political party, and how much of it goes to paid solicitors.

The reason I wonder about this is because I made a donation to both a candidate and a political party last year and since then I’ve been inundated with phone calls and junk mail soliciting donations for everything imaginable. It’s to the point now that my wife and I won’t even answer the phone if it’s either from a blocked number or from out of the area. I’ve put my number on the Federal No Call List, and for some reason it doesn’t work with these people.

On one of the last calls from a blocked number I answered, after a brief pause a pleasant sounding young lady came on the line. (There’s always a pause on the line when you answer one of these calls, so if it’s a male voice that answers, they put on a female, and vice versa if a female answers the call) After she delivered her practiced dialogue on the political candidate, she asked for my credit card number. I then asked her, “Are there really people out there who’ll receive a phone call from a stranger in the middle of the night and they’ll then give that stranger their credit card number?” When she answered, “Yes,” I hung up.

When I lived in Indianapolis, the guy next door ran one of those "police and fire charities". His wife bought new furniture for their house every 6 months. They had 4 cars, none of which was over a year old.

I give to 2 charities:

My church

St. Jude Children's Hospital.

In the wake of the IRS scandals, one would think that the “red flags” would have been raised on these organizations when their papers were filed every year.

I understand the “dig” here but in this case, IRS is collecting the information and making it public which is where this info comes here. We don’t want the IRS involved any further than that.

Biggest fraud in my area is the United Way. Dumped the Boy Scouts and sponsors the annual Queer Youth Leadership Awards.

An excellent and timely post.

Besides the data posted in the study, a big question not answered are the salaries of top money suckers and their staff. Out in Californicator land, many left wingers make their money supposedly working for non profits. They often get paid very well for so called advisory positions and as phony worker bees.

My wife, an RN all of her adult life has noticed a lot of new or semi new charities pushing for money for basically incureable diseases. These blood sucking phony charities might have some handouts for those suffering and their families.

Last but not least, many of the so called non profits send a lot of money to left wing politics and causes.

One more thing to check. How much do they spend on lobbying to raise taxes. A local to me charity does a great job supporting the elderly but they are always leading the charge for a tax levy to support various senior citizen projects.
