Edward Snowden: I mistakenly believed in Obama’s promises
Washington Examiner ^ | Sunday June 9, 2013

Posted on 06/09/2013 2:04:20 PM PDT by Bigtigermike

Edward Snowden, the self-revealed whistle-blower at the National Security Agency, explains that part of the reason he decided to come forward was because President Obama did not roll back the surveillance measures put into place by the Bush Administration.

“A lot of people in 2008 voted for Obama. I did not vote for him. I voted for a third party,” Snowden said in an i nterview with the Guardian. “But I believed in Obama’s promises. I was going to disclose it [but waited because of his election]. He continued with the policies of his predecessor.”

Snowden acknowledged that he watched Obama struggle as he attempted to justify the surveillance programs during his press conference on Friday.

The man took an oath ~ a serious oath ~ and he broke it and now he's bragging about it and, in effect, claiming moral superiority over those of us who respect oaths.

He is a liar, and it's not just me saying that he is. He says it himself.

From what little I've seen so far, I disagree with you. We either protect the Constitution or we protect Obama and his enablers in government. There's no way to do both... he choose the morally correct path in my opinion.

If the administration had known it was this little guy responsible for the leak, they would have smeared him beyond credulity and swept it back under the rug. Instead they admitted it.

Probably good that he was not college educated, he got four years' less indoctrination that way. And it's not unheard of that someone with only a GED gets a high tech job. Start out with a start up that favors talent over diplomas, build a reputation, and move up from there. I have a cousin who did that. Dropped out of high school but was a computer wiz. Got a GED and after a couple of successful gigs, he's commanding six figures.

Sounds to me like he was a Ron Paul voter. Fits in with what he is saying and his reasoning about privacy rights. I smell a Ron Paul follower.

Free Republic can really be schizophrenic at times. On this thread the comments are practically 100% against Snowden. On this thread
http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/3029246/posts

comments are about 60% in favor of Snowden.

I believe this man is sincere. He didn’t vote for Obama. I read the whole Guardian article. http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2013/jun/09/edward-snowden-nsa-whistleblower-surveillance

This guy is no Bradley Manning. He seems principled.
From his interview:

“”I carefully evaluated every single document I disclosed to ensure that each was legitimately in the public interest,” he said. “There are all sorts of documents that would have made a big impact that I didn’t turn over, because harming people isn’t my goal. Transparency is.””

“I could have sold these documents to any number of countries and gotten very rich.””

This guy has given his life for this, and he knows it. Even if he stays alive for another year (which is doubtful), his life is over. Our government is completely out of control, and this is the one thing that stands a chance at helping us get back on the right path.

“The urge to purge becomes too great and sooner or later someone uses that information to become a despot.”

I agree and, if anyone doubts that outcome, they have to look no further than the IRS use of an “enemy list”.

Remember who this administration listed as terrorists earlier on...

Will you, eventually fall UNDER SUSPICION? Because if you do, they will have your comments, you Freeper writings, your e-mails and all the government will need is a pretext.

I heard an interview with him and he expects the CIA will kill him. He is in Hong Kong and from what he said, he will stay there.

Maybe.

He seems principled.

Seems is the operative word. He is an idiot who broke rules based on very sound principles. The main one he didn't seem to understand is the one you quoted:

I carefully evaluated every single document I disclosed...

That's not his job. The fact is he doesn't have a clue what should be disclosed. He may not be Bradley Manning indiscriminately disclosing anything, but he broke the same rules that B.M. did.

he expects the CIA will kill him

He is delusional. They may try to capture him, but they follow rules just like he didn't.

my wife works at a local very famous hospital - they are reducing the number of employees by 25%, stopped their retirement matching contributions all because they are one of the first in the region to install the obamacare software and systems that do not work as advertised...but since they are reducing staff they are also putting a GPS on each of their badges to track them while at work...this kind of techy sh*t instead of paying decent wages anymore...i have had it in this life...thank God i have already lived more years...many more years than i have left to live.... putting equal

“He’s too high profile to kill now... I’m concerned about his loved ones...”

They will kill him right there in Hong Kong. He said the American Consulate is down the street from him and the CIA are in Hong Kong, too. Hong Kong has high hills above the city and has the ocean there and lots of people and machinery everywhere and hidden places, too, since it is congested. Very easy to do away with someone there - an unfortunate accident you know.

This is just more of the same self-released scandals that Valerie Jarrett has engineered to distract from Benghazi.

Benghazi is where the treason lies, and they know it, and they will do ANYTHING to get Benghazi off the radar.

“Do you really want to take the side of a traitor and a spy?”

Are you serious? The only traitors and spies I have seen in the last five years are filling the halls of the White House and Congress.

What is wrong with you. They are gathering information on every citizen in this country and STORING it. They have already named half of this country as domestic terrorists.

Get a grip!!!!

While there was treason involved with Benghazi, this administration knows that most Dems couldn't care less about it... much less understand anything having to do with foreign events. It's PRISM that is soon going to be their huge problem... since liberals have a natural distaste for all things having to do with spying and all that "spook" stuff. Learning that politicians are using these tools against US will make a huge mess for Washington.
