Media members thinking the Republicans are overplaying their hand with the Internal Revenue Service scandal should pay attention to what happened on NBCs Tonight Show Monday.
When host Jay Leno joked that President Obama should close the IRS rather than the terrorist detention center in Guantanamo Bay, the audience erupted in thunderous applause (video follows with transcript and absolutely no need for additional commentary):
JAY LENO: President Obama says hes renewing his efforts to close Guantanamo Bay. Guantanamo Bay? How about closing the IRS? Why dont we do that?
[Thunderous applause]
How about shipping the IRS to Guantanamo Bay? Thats what we, yes! Thats how you do it.
[Thunderous applause]
Well, more problems with the IRS. A new report has found that they spent $50 million on employee conferences and retreats in just two years. They would have investigated sooner, but it turns out, you know, they dont belong to any conservative groups. So nobody really noticed. They didnt really see it. A little odd, yeah.
You got it! Although he has a large enough audience..is "visible" enough....that they might resist the temptation even though the temptation would be *huge* even at the very top.
“The IRS to audit Jay Leno in 5, 4, 3 ...”
Doubtful, as Leno spent most of the last 5+ years staying quiet about and supporting the Fraud.
Jay is having the best case of short timer syndrome ever.
Not entirely true
The IRS is a gangster organization, they make the mafia look like boy scouts.
Just a letter from the IRS will strike terror in your heart, so much so you are afraid to open it.
so he can poke fun at the king.
What’s really good about the USA is that you can make fun of the irs. You couldn’t make jokes about the KGB without waking up dead one day. The irs has a sense of humor, and will laugh heartily with Jay, truly enjoying the humor in the situation. The irs is a benevolent giant, cheerfully collecting meager taxes from willing citizens, and helpfully providing meaningful and useful information to assist citizens in their once a year duty. Yes, with the irs we are truly free and proudly doing our civic duty. On to the future with irs!
