Jean Stapleton, who played Archie Bunker’s long-suffering wife Edith in the long-running 1970s television series “All in the Family,” died Friday at her New York City home. She was 90.
Stapleton died of natural causes, her family announced Saturday.

The Jefferson’s was also created and operated to promote Norman Lear’s leftwing views.
To change the American culture over 40 years took effort, and like Sesame Street, it had to be made to reach into the homes, the messaging is the purpose but it has to be worked into something palatable.
So THAT’s what the lyric was. I never did understand and couldn’t figure anything out to fit it.

When the show was on originally, I agreed with Mike and Gloria. When I watch reruns now, I agree with Archie. LOL

LOL Must be great to go through life in such a joyless manner. BTW Lear had a fairly minimal role in actually writing AITF. Look at the writing credits of each episode after the first few. They were mostly written by NYC comedy writers. Caroll O’Connor claimed that he re-wrote most of them.
BTW Some of the original AITF writers went on to write/run ‘Three’s Company’ which I’m sure you still believe was meant to ‘erode the morals of the American people’.

My posts have all been focused on the series All in the Family.
The is ZERO doubt of what Norman Lear’s purpose of the series was, and what his political/cultural goals were that he wanted from the series.

Just curious, do you think that liking ‘The Twlight Zone’ is also suspect? Rod Serling admitted that he wanted a forum for his political views (which were liberal). Remember the show ‘That Girl’ with Marlo Thomas? It had a woman living alone and career minded...feminist propaganda? You can keep going...
What is joyless about not being a fan of Norman Lear? Of not liking All in the Family, in fact, of not liking television at all.
How broken to the TV/Hollywood leash are you that someone not liking a TV series from 40 years ago, from conservative hating members of varying levels of left wing leadership, must be “joyless”.
Television and joyful people is not a great match up, TV is largely a wasteland for depressives and unengaged, passive people.

Very sad news, she was one of a kind who truly brought the phrase “better half” to life, while taking the brunt of Archie’s bombast with a smile. So in affection, I have to say: “RIP, Dingbat”
For the most part AITS transcends the politics of the time as most people today would agree. Movies are just as important a part of American culture as books and music.
As is denying reality, and then throwing out a blitz of brain dead statements disparaging those who point out reality.
You were unaware of reality when you were a kid.
We get that.
Trying to make reality go away now is not the brightest course today though. Its not like Lear made any secret of his goals. He was always open about it.
Its fair game for discussion.
I’m not disparaging anyone. AITF made me laugh as a kid and it still makes lots of people laugh today...including most people here. I couldn’t care less what Lear’s politics were. Jack London was a Marxist but I still love The Call of the Wild.
I think you completely missed the fact that the Meathead was wrong as often as Archie was wrong, and that George Jefferson was a bigger bigot than probably anyone else on the show. It was pretty even-handed for a time when the world was changing rapidly.
