The House Ways and Means Committee holds the first Congressional hearing on the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) subjecting applicants for tax-exempt status to higher levels of scrutiny based on political leanings.
Witnesses include Acting IRS Commissioner Steve Miller who resigned on Wednesday and the Treasury Departments Inspector General Russell George for Tax Administration.
Committee Chairman Dave Camp (R-MI) said the IRS' targeting of "American taxpayers based on politics is both astounding and appalling." He stated that the Committee will "get to the bottom of this practice and ensure it never takes place again.
In announcing the hearing, Ranking Member Sander Levin (D-MI) said that it is "essential that there be a thorough and bipartisan investigation and effective remedial action.
Since June 2011, the Committee on Ways and Means has been investigating whether the Internal Revenue Service discriminated against taxpayers based on political opinions.
“Schock: Will you ask those questions in the future?
George: I will ask that, if appropriate. We will certainly do so, if appropriate.”
Thanks for posting this, I missed that exchange that the IG audit never asked the question of IRS employees if their questions were politically motivated... It’s on record now that the next audit will include those (if appropriate)...
Good riddance! Bunch of damn Communists, the whole lot of them.
We have got some real bulldogs at the bottom of the Repubs asking questions! They should be going First!
Sent Young the article on Soros spending $6+ million to go after groups yesterday. Asked him to pursue RICO
The article named groups involved. Shouldn’t take too much research to check names against individuals involved once we get the names
Also need WH records on how often GS visited
This is a big problem with our government - incompetent!”
Gov. Unions in particular. Seniority based not performance. A vast majority don’t even get performance reviews. Got a heartbeat? get a raise.
Some of those guys MUST know the rage that's out here !
Thanks!!
Government has become corrupt at ALL levels, and ...From the local DMV to the Oval office...
They too are wishing you thought this was simply mere incompetence.
Jim McDermott (D, WA)
JM: I'm reminded.... it's also about Republican storyline in this agenda. We need to find some truth here. And I've heard members of this committee talk about it.
The IRS can't access your medical file. Is that true Mr. Miller?
Steve Miller: Correct
JM: They cannot find out your medical information?
SM: That's correct sir.
JM: Their (IRS) job in Obamacare is simply to collect paid financial information on which a determination is made as to whether somebody can get a subsidy for their premiums. Is that correct?
SM: Were you covered and over what period is what we would be getting.
JM: It is not a fascist takeover that's going on here of the healthcare system.
And let's not forget that the IRS has one of the hardest and most hated jobs and their are thousands and thousands of good, solid, hardworking Americans who work every day to run the system.
And a couple of people make a problem. That does not damage the organization in my view. You get rid of the people who made the problem.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I heard yesterday that under ObamaCare, the IRS is tasked with 47 discrete responsibilities! This requires an additional 16,000 IRS employees (and as we know even that number will be "revised.")
We can always depend on the radical leftists to tell the truth in what they deny
JM: "It is not a fascist takeover that's going on here of the healthcare system."
Note to self on McDermott: Posts 245, 250
I was spitting nails, called my Congressional Reps office and had a “conversation” with a staffer. She said, today was only the beginning, Jack Lew will be brought in next week, “I encourage you to watch.”
No, they’re going in exactly the right order. Notice that the tough questions are being asked after there are no more Dems in the order. The Dems don’t have any more opportunities to rebut or lead Miller/George into giving the “right” answers.
Great!!
Here are some more to consider:
Cannot comment, under investigation
Poor customer service
Bush’s fault
We need mo money
Needs something about not having enough money to prevent abuse.
Read it in the paper / saw it on tv
If only they felt that was about fighting terrorists instead of getting in bed with them!
