The House Ways and Means Committee holds the first Congressional hearing on the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) subjecting applicants for tax-exempt status to higher levels of scrutiny based on political leanings.
Witnesses include Acting IRS Commissioner Steve Miller who resigned on Wednesday and the Treasury Departments Inspector General Russell George for Tax Administration.
Committee Chairman Dave Camp (R-MI) said the IRS' targeting of "American taxpayers based on politics is both astounding and appalling." He stated that the Committee will "get to the bottom of this practice and ensure it never takes place again.
In announcing the hearing, Ranking Member Sander Levin (D-MI) said that it is "essential that there be a thorough and bipartisan investigation and effective remedial action.
Since June 2011, the Committee on Ways and Means has been investigating whether the Internal Revenue Service discriminated against taxpayers based on political opinions.
It is beyond frustrating. Poor customer service? Lord help us please!
That is all on the member. Did you see what Gowdy did with his five minutes with the Benghazi whistle blowers?? Members need to get their minds right and cut to the chase.
When it does, it will screw every single democrat too. They won't be immune at open enrollment time when Fall rolls around and those premiums double or triple. They'll be begging for repeal. Or, wait until those IRS forms start showing up in their mailboxes digging into their business. I don't understand what makes these idealogical obama butt lickers think none of this will effect them?
Same thing they always do. Who received justice for fast and furious>
Oh really? Did not read that yet.
If the IRS is so honest, why do they routinely settle for 33% or less of what they initially stick up the audited people for?
If the screening criteria were not politically motivated, then it follows that at least one Lib or Progressive group would have been caught up in this during the three-year period. Was there one? No....
the only real question is: what is the GOP going to do about it?
For whatever reason little at this point...they should be pounding these guys hard....but maybe going after bigger fish?.....Wishful thinking perhaps.
Missed the exchange. Who said what about “the good guys”?
How in the world can they claim it wasn’t political, when only right wing groups were targeted?
What b******t.
It’s not bad...but could be SO much better.....
“A voluntary system, my A$$!”
When did particaption in th eIRS become voluntary? I must have missed that in my education. The IRS wields more power than other gaovernment agency including the military. I don’t remember ever writing a check to the IRS everytime I receiveda paycheck. Seems it was already deducted from my wages. That folks is not voluntary.
We are getting something important today which is the Dems circling the wagons and not giving an inch. Boehner & McConnell will have to fight or they will lose this one too.
I don’t understand what makes these idealogical obama butt lickers think none of this will effect them?
Because they know in the long run this will pass while they walk to the bank.
The arrogance and lawlessness of this entire administration should be met with articles of impeachment.
I’m sure that there is alot going on that we don’t yet know and the repubs aren’t saying (I hope). Millers arrogance is astounding and he will not give names. He’ll tell us to watch the news.
Wait for it...somewhere, someone in the Obama food chain is post generating documents to show equal treatment of tax exempt status to MoveOn, MediaMatters, ad nauseum. Watch it happen...
Miller is essentially a 'hostile' witness. Pretending to be; anything but. . .
This hearing is a farce. The Reps should have been better prepared. They should be tearing this guy a new one. He is so f’ing arrogant. He typifies the government bureaucrat who could care less about the public.
Finally...”what are the names??” Yay
