Brad Pitt wishes a "long and healthy life" for his fiancée Angelina Jolie.

The Hollywood actress made the decision after genetic tests revealed she had an 87 per cent chance of developing breast cancer and a 50 per cent chance of ovarian cancer.

Brad, 49, today hailed Angelina for showing such bravery during the process.

"Having witnessed this decision firsthand, I find Angie's choice, as well as so many others like her, absolutely heroic," he told British newspaper The London Evening Standard. "I thank our medical team for their care and focus. All I want for is for her to have a long and healthy life, with myself and our children. This is a happy day for our family."

You must not know much about cancer.

Read the other thread where someone detected a lump 3 months after a mammogram...and ended up dying from it.

Btw, if YOU have about a 10% chance of NOT getting cancer and you CHOOSE to take that risk that you will fall in the 10%...that is your choice.

But don’t denigrate people who are trying to PREVENT the cancer that they have about a 90% chance of getting.

And once that cancer shows up..ANY cancer ...it is hell on wheels to fight it.

There are a few cancers that are fairly easy to treat - early skin cancer...but most are a nightmare.

All of you, just wait and see what else I am having replaced... for the better.

Well, you can't fault the gal... for getting the best!

understood, but if it is such a private medical decision, why must she celebrate this? for a private decision, she couldn’t make it any louder had she taken otu billboards.

Lara Cropped had other alternatives, especially if she went to South Africa. She has enough wealth to have exercised less “heoic” options. There is a well developed field of immunology involving Cykotines and Non cyckotines in Cancer Immunology.

When combined with a speific diet, she would have had very little chance to contract breast cancer:

well, no.

You are posting untruths about the BRCA genes and Jolie’s decisions. And misinformation about the risk to women who have this and the handling of that risk. And misinformation avout the state of treatment and vaccines for OVCA. You might think about that rather than popping off.

the abject idiocy of those on this thread criticizing this decision is breathtaking to me. how lucky are they that they have had no reason to know a blessed thing about breast cancer.

Precisely because of the idiocy displayed on this thread, camle! because clearly it is not widely known that carriers of the BRAC gene have a near certain chance to get and die from breast cancer. because she is publicizing this, people, women, are getting educated that this is a possible alternative to certain death.

I know and it reminds me of those awful people who defined the personal as political, mostly democratic feminists. They spew hate and spread disinformation as if they are the truthtellers.

And the ignorance is shocking but the lack of willimgness to learn is more so.

Now Jolie doesnt have to be called a heroine, trying to live is not heroic to me. It is something most of us do. But to publicize this was brave given the misogyny of men and some women.

These threads do not bring out the thoughtful people on FR, and there are alot of them, it is a pity.

well i guess we can quibble over the dilution of the meaning of hero/heroine, and i can see that. But in an appearance based business i do think it required bravery to publicize it and that it was done with the intention of educating others. Cancer transcends politics and to see this as a political stunt, to me, is just mindboggling.

PS Some truths:

the BRCa genes confer both ovarian and breast cancer risks.

Other unidentified genetic abnormalities are implicated but not as well defined.

All vaccines for ovarian cancer are in phase one or two trials. One is in phase three but while promising are not definitely imvestigated. So far they are given to women who have cancer, not as preventatives.

OVCa is way more deadly than Breast ca but not as common. With the genetic risks, if you have more than one first degree relative with breast or ovca, the testing is necessary!

Other cancers are at incidence with the genes including colon cancer

The only definitive treatment for ovca is surgery and most of the time, chemo. Death rates are high, better than a few years ago but five yr survival is about 30 percent.

Prevention if at high risk is taking breasts and ovaries and tubes out.

Prevention is a Godsend.

i’m sorry, but i have a high risk of alzheimer’s. should i have a lobotomy? i would think that it is better to wait until you actually have the disease before you start lopping off body parts, sorry if you disagree, XS.

Behavior modification? Like reducing salt intake if you have high BP or a risk of it?
