WASHINGTON (AP) The Justice Department secretly obtained two months of telephone records of reporters and editors for The Associated Press in what the news cooperative's top executive called a "massive and unprecedented intrusion" into how news organizations gather the news.
The records obtained by the Justice Department listed incoming and outgoing calls, and the duration of each call, for the work and personal phone numbers of individual reporters, general AP office numbers in New York, Washington and Hartford, Conn., and the main number for AP reporters in the House of Representatives press gallery, according to attorneys for the AP.
In all, the government seized those records for more than 20 separate telephone lines assigned to AP and its journalists in April and May of 2012. The exact number of journalists who used the phone lines during that period is unknown but more than 100 journalists work in the offices whose phone records were targeted on a wide array of stories about government and other matters.
In a letter of protest sent to Attorney General Eric Holder on Monday, AP President and Chief Executive Officer Gary Pruitt said the government sought and obtained information far beyond anything that could be justified by any specific investigation. He demanded the return of the phone records and destruction of all copies.
"There can be no possible justification for such an overbroad collection of the telephone communications of The Associated Press and its reporters. These records potentially reveal communications with confidential sources across all of the newsgathering activities undertaken by the AP during a two-month period, provide a road map to AP's newsgathering operations, and disclose information about AP's activities and operations that the government has no conceivable right to know," Pruitt said.
The government would not say why it sought the records. U.S. officials have previously said in public testimony that the U.S. attorney in Washington is conducting a criminal investigation into who may have leaked information contained in a May 7, 2012, AP story about a foiled terror plot. The story disclosed details of a CIA operation in Yemen that stopped an al-Qaida plot in the spring of 2012 to detonate a bomb on an airplane bound for the United States.
Your welcome.
“But, it isnt clear the rule was followed.”
No rules... He just followed the Fox News (UK Affiliate) procedures for wiretapping cell phones!!!
Wow. I have been pessimistic up until now. I think the wheels just flew off the wagon.
Pruitt cannot be this naive, shirley! ... “There can be no possible justification for such an overbroad collection of the telephone communications of The Associated Press and its reporters.” The bastard emperor demand the media serve him and his agenda. That’s all the justification Eric the red Holder needs, in his criminal mind. It’s the Chicago way don’tchaknow!
Do you think John Brennan will open fire on Obama? He was sent there to employ it against Obama’s domestic enemies along with Holder at DOJ.
Good ‘ole AP held their tongue through the election.
Do yah think coverage got more favorable with 20 phone taps? Noting the AP was already in the tank for Obama.
I’d bet some people at the AP thought it was sexy in a masocistic way! (Sorry)
The AP probably wants a Pulitzer for this way late revolation.
Hmmm. If Obongo’s posse did this to a friendly organization like the AP, I wonder what they’ve done to Enemies of the State like Fox News?
Ya know, I’ve thought from the beginning that Obama was Jimmy Carter’s second term; but, now I have to ponder whether it might be a combination of Carter/Nixon.
The regime's enemies list apparently now covers half the population, various pro-America groups and apparently now media that does not goose-step.
The bigger question IMHO is what has this president recently done that is constructive as opposed to destructive to America and Americans? Continuous pandering for donations, playing golf, taking vacations while millions are jobless and losing everything they own, investigating and/or overhearing emails, internet posts of citizens and media, giving away American sovereignty, supporting abortion at all levels, making sure very young teen girls get morning after pills without parental guidance, tap dancing around Fast & Furious and Benghazi, interjecting pre-trial comment about Trevon as a look-alike son, continuing the obsession with taking away the guns of Americans, suggesting child care when the nation is financially overloaded, and not stopping Obamacare from implementation when its devastating effects are beginning to affect healthcare insurance, hospitals, doctors and citizens in very bad ways.
Let’s see in the last year we have...
1. Benghazi
2. Boston Bombings
3. IRS profiling
4. Eavesdropping on the AP
I”m sure I’ve left something out that should be newsworthy. What would the reaction be if Bush(or any other Republican president) were in office?
I agree, but that’s not what I was saying.
We should find a third world country that needs a constitution and give them ours. We’re obviously not using it anymore.
-— How many calls to Mistresses, masters, slaves, etc were co opted by the Regime? -—
Or sources.
Oh and just who hacked into AP’s twitter account with a message that sent the market into a flash crash??? Do we even know yet?
BUMP
..if Chewie takes three vacations in a row, we’ll know..
Yup. Team O vs. Team Clinton. It ain’t gonna be pretty.
What is more astonishing, supposing one finds this astonishing, is the continuation of the servile “reporting” AP, and others, have provided this Marxist regime.
The greatest threat to this Country is the Leftwing faction in media.
This is the one thing that may actually irritate the Democrat “mainstream” newsrooms into looking at their project differently. Of course, they can pretend to go “really go after” the Ubama administartion now that they have him safely reelected.
