Thank you so much, ML! That theme has haunted me from the first time I heard it. We have sung a couple of good settings of it in my Church Choir.
Another one that has haunted me for years is "Zion Hört Die Wächter Singen." I worked on that one for some time, but never got to perform it in public. Very frustrating.

Have not, Maestro! My taste is rather antiquarian, although I do like some 20th Century material. Also, the OSW was fixed on the old warhorses. We did sing a couple of recent works - Orff's "Carmina Burana", William Walton's "Belshazzar's Feast," and we premiered a choral work by Russell Woolen - "The Hound of Heaven." I liked those works, but I'm still firmly ensconced in the Baroque and Classical periods.

Jesus Christ Superstar was a monumental work, especially considering composer Andrew Lloyd Webber was only 21 years-old and lyricist Tim Rice was 25. They picked up where Pete Townshend left off in Tommy and where Galt MacDermot left off in Hair. Webber brought the Rock Opera into legitimacy - a true art form. There's much could be said about the operatic and oratorio traditions employed, the sheer magnitude of the project and the artistry of the various casts. In my opinion, Ian Gillan was the perfect voice to portray Christ. His passion, range and professionalism was well established with the band Deep Purple and when he didn't choose to go on to Broadway and the movie, I was disappointed. But, that was not my greatest disappointment.
John 19:41 "Now in the place where he was crucified there was a garden; and in the garden a new sepulchre, wherein was never man yet laid."
I suppose you can guess that I feel just one more selection was needed. Jesus Christ Superstar is unfinished and stands broken and blemished in my eyes and ears. The story doesn't end with John 19:41 because He rose from that tomb and He's comming again someday. Maybe if they had ended with another passage from the book of John I'd be able to see Superstar in a different light, but for me it's forever flawed. But I can't leave it that way . . .
