Justice Sonia Sotomayor was questioning former U.S. Solicitor General Ted Olson, a pro-gay marriage Republican. She brought up a very interesting question during the exchange: If gay marriage is legal, what about polygamy?
Sotomayor asked, "If you say that marriage is a fundamental right, what state restrictions could ever exist?" before referencing "polygamy and incest among adults," as reported by Matt Canham of the Salt Lake Tribune. The argument is an illustration of a broader issue about the culture of American society. To agree that gay marriage is indeed protected by the "equal protection" clause in the Constitution, wouldn't the same apply for all consenting adult relationships?
Justice Sonia Sotomayor's thought-provoking question was echoed by Bishop Harry Jackson, a minister at Hope Christian Church in Beltsville, Md. He believes that "the real issue is the religious liberty issue and the issue of whether we can practice marriage as we believe it on an ongoing basis," and further stated that if same-sex marriage "is allowed to be mandated by fiat...then, right behind it, polygamy and many other forms of marriage will automatically sweep the land within just a matter of a few years." Advocates of legalizing gay marriage, as opposed to offering a compromise of "civil unions," which they argue is no different than "separate but equal" should consider this question.
Recently, President Obama's "Organizing for Action" tweeted a quote from the president, whose position on this has "evolved" in a big way from 2008, when he stated, "I believe marriage is between a man and a woman. I am not in favor of gay marriage." The tweet quoted the President as saying: "Every single American deserves to be treated equally in the eyes of the law," followed by the hashtag #MarriageEquality. If this is true, than America should do away with programs like affirmative action, which do not treat everyone "equally". Additionally, if this is true, than loving polygamous families should be allowed to get married.

But I would add one point: it is all part of Satan’s scheme as he seeks to destroy what is good.
And it is more evidence of our need to turn to God and obey Him.

Polygamy has been practiced by various human civilizations for hundreds of years whereas “gay marriage” has been a recent invention barely one generation old.Wrong! Same sex marriage was common place in the Roman Empire. In fact Nero had his lover castrated and married him.

Even among many Indian nations, same sex marriage was common with males. It was not allowed for women, but the men did practice it. Women had no say so in anything they did.
Throughout history, societies have always had some sort of homosexual cultures that were accepted as normal. That is until Christianity was introduced and they realized it was a sin against the One true God.
The point she is trying to make (and its a good one) is not that polygamy is illegal. It is that if gay marriage is a “right”, then what moral objection could be made to polygamy, or incest? And if the answer to that is “none”, as logically there couldnt be, then the next step is necrophilia, bestiality, and ultimately paedophilia

I think it wouldn’t. When I visited Temple Square a few years ago, the tour guides were mostly young women. I asked them about that and they said, “no way!”

You’re misinformed OneVike and being indoctrinated by a history designed to normalize what has always been deviant behavior in Roman and Greek history. This is agenda driven history, not the reality in those cultures from Babylonia through Egypt, Greece and Rome.
Imagine stating that pornography and prostitution were “commonplace” in American history. That would be a lie. Did they exist? Yes, e.g. Boston’s prostitutes existed and gave good anti-British intelligence. Were they “commonplace”? Depends on the definition.
If you mean accepted as a societal norm, no. That Bill Clinton had ongoing sexual relations with a variety of women in the White House as President doesn’t indicate that the behavior is a societal norm. It’s just within the last decades that pornography has become widely available and tolerated in America. It won’t end well.

I also noticed you didn't name any specific Native American tribes for a reason-- because child molestation and homosexuality were so gross that most tribes would disown or kill the practitioners outright.

Well, one doesn’t need to be in favor of gay marriage to be in favor of polygamy. One might open the door to the other legally, but it doesn’t follow that everyone who supports one will necessarily support the other.
I don’t believe Sharia is brought into existance by popular demand in any country that has it. Just like Obamas socialism wasn’t asked for here. I understand that many muslims are just go along to get along but they need to be more vocal against their radical brothers before I see any difference.

It won’t. It will tacitly allow it and then allow the Court to avoid having to hear such a case in order to explicitly permit it.

Hell, why not challenge the laws on prostitution? There will be a stronger argument against criminalization of the contract between two consenting adults once a "right" to marry is found to be fundamental.

Maybe, but LDS is a pretty “top-down” religion, meaning that the opinion of the average member doesn’t count for much when it comes to doctrine. If their prophets and council members declared that polygamy was acceptable again, some might leave the church, but I don’t think there would be a schism.
