Folk heroes to some, villains to others, the owners of the Route 66 Malt Shop in Albuquerque have refused to abide by the citys recently adopted minimum wage ordinance. The increase, they say, would bury their 18-year-old small business.
We had the choice to close the business and destroy 18 years of blood, sweat and tears and hundreds of thousands of dollars over the years and fire 12 people or disobey the law, Eric Szeman told New Mexico Watchdog after a busy lunch-time rush.
The laws the law, said Pat Davis, executive director of the liberal activist group Progress Now Mexico, which organized a protest in front of the malt shop earlier this week. What theyre doing is wrong, and it amounts to stealing from their workers.
Pure and simple, it would double one-third of our payroll, said Szeman, a 65-year-old Navy veteran whos married to the restaurants owner, Diane Avila. It would put us up to $5,000-$6,000 (in payroll) from $3,600
anything over that, were out of business.

Progress...a ‘buzz word’ for communism...
In order to stay in compliance with the new city laws regarding minimum wage, we regret to announce that burgers, fries and shakes are now costing you a dollar more. Thank you for your continued business and support of our Employees.
New Mexico PING!!
“Sorry - you have to either comply with the law or shutdown your business and fire your employees in the name of fairness” /sarc
Once the rent-a-mob appeared outside his restaurant I knew they wouldn’t stop until he was destroyed. It does bother me that the City Attorney is working with the little whiner that’s complaining.
“I can’t be responsible for every under-capitalized business out there”.
Hillary Clinton, pushing Socialized Medicine in 1993.
Let’s see.... food costs are up, delivery costs are up (fuel).... did they “go out of business” when that happened, or just raise their prices like everyone else? Their “protest” sounds a little much. I agree, though, with keeping government out of setting wages, it’s not something they should be involved in.
The law is the law, but it’s also an ass, as are those that push to “make the world a better place” by coercing other people.
If these guys voted for Obama, or any Democrat, I have no sympathy for them (yes, I know this isn’t a federal law we are talking about).
If they didn’t, they are innocent victims of a vast left-wing conspiracy.
In the leftist “mind” all employers exploit their employees and earn an obscene profit off their work.
Reality: business owners work their a$$e$ off and get little in return, with the government up their a$$e$ with regulations and taxes.
Their end goal is to destroy private business ownership and put it all in the hands of government.
It was necessary to destroy the village in order to save it.

Our local pizza shop is getting killed by the higher cost of produce/ materials and the recession with less folks going out to eat. But when the min. wage goes up, he has to pay his worst workers that, and he wants to reward his better workers so he pays them more. And the price of pizza goes up so fewer folks come in to eat.....
We used to eat there as a special treat as the pies were expensive years ago. We go once a week now in an attempt to give him support. Great pizza! But if things don’t turn around quick I’m not sure if he can hold on.
| Is that a Freudian slip?
Pat, the legitimacy of the authority of the law derives from the Constitution. When "the law" is not constitutional, you're no better than a thug imposing his will on another person through the threat of violence.
Close the doors for 3 weeks take a vacation! No city sales tax
no wages, no utility usage, No vendors selling product!
I would also say other businesses do the same for three days!
I would also think this so called labor law would have to be presented on the state level!
And ride the idiot out of town on a rail!
I have so much trouble with sheeple “just going along” to the slaughter, that it makes my heart sing to know that there are even more people who are fighting MAD!
“I’m mad as hell and I’m not going to take it any more!” I heard that somewhere...yah...like that. :o]
OR MAYBE; ‘Thank you for continuing to elect these half-wits (who’ve never had a real job) that came up with this insanity.
