~The FReeper Canteen Presents~

Road Trip: Marine Corps Base Quantico, Virginia

Marine Corps Base Quantico is located near Triangle, Virginia. Known as the "Crossroads of the Marine Corps", it is a major Marine Corps training base, covering nearly 100 square miles. The Corps's Combat Development Command is based here, which develops strategies for Marine combat, and makes up most of the community of over 12,000 military and civilian personnel, including families.

Spaniards visited Quantico 40 years before Jamestown was settled and Captain John Smith explored the Potomac banks in 1608. Tobacco was the main product of early Scottish settlers in the Quantico area, which was the home of many Revolutionary War heroes.

American, British and French armies used nearby roads to move from one battlefield to another. During the Civil War, Confederates used the Potomac's banks as gun positions to halt Union traffic on the river. By the 1880s the land had been acquired by speculators, who sold it to the Corps in 1917.

Since its inception in 1917, Marine Corps Base, Quantico, has been the "frontline of innovation." Marine concepts, doctrine, training, and equipment of the future are initiated aboard the Base. The techniques of amphibious warfare, for which the Corps is renowned, were conceived and perfected here.

Quantico also serves as the focal point for professional military education. The Marine Corps University provides the academic platform the Corps uses to shape and hone leaders at every milestone of their professional lives.

Officers in the Marine Corps begin their careers at the Officer Candidates School and The Basic School. Enlisted marines receive additional leadership training at the University's Staff Non-Commissioned Officers Academy.

The National Museum of the Marine Corps is the historical museum of the United States Marine Corps. Designed by Fentress Architects, the exterior design is meant to "evoke the image of the flag raisers of Iwo Jima," an image that is also preserved by the USMC War Memorial. The 100,000 square foot museum is a tribute to the U.S. Marines who have served their country since 1775.

The National Museum of the Marine Corps preserves and exhibits the material history of the U.S. Marine Corps; honors the commitment, accomplishments, and sacrifices of Marines; supports recruitment, training, education, and retention of Marines; and provides the public with a readily accessible platform for the exploration of Marine Corps history.

The National Museum of the Marine Corps is the centerpiece of a complex of facilities called the Marine Corps Heritage Center. This multi-use, 135-acre campus includes the Semper Fidelis Memorial Park and Chapel; a demonstration area with parade grounds; hiking trails and other outdoor recreational offerings; a conference center and hotel; and an archive facility to restore and preserve Marine artifacts.

Just a sprinkle of rain. The wind broke a couple of dead limbs out of a tree that I needed to cut down. I’ll go outside and pick them up later.

Ours seems to have survived all right, but hubby said that quite a few shingles were off the church building roof. Ugh! That’ll be a pain to repair!...and he is probably the one that will have the “pleasure” of doing it.

They are out removing the carcasses of the turned over trucks this morning. Quite a strange day. Blizzard north of us dropped nearly 2 feet of snow...Amarillo. Hope you dodged this wind!

A very pleasant good morning and ((HUGS)) to everyone at the Canteen and to all our military at home and abroad. Thanks for your service to our country.

The reason for being later to the Canteen this morning is because our ISP, Pioneer Telephone Cooperative, Kingfisher Oklahoma has had some issues related to the blizzard which impacted parts of the Central plains yesterday. A number of communities lost power due to the stress brought on by the heavy snow and strong winds combined.

Pioneer Telephone has numerous sites which run on generators however, due to the blizzard their techs were unable to reach those generators to refuel them. As a result, power was lost and some services were interrupted in some places, including Internet.

Here in Comanche OK, we never got below freezing. We had some light rain and that was about it. However, some place around our area did lose power due to winds.

In any event, things have calmed down, The storm has passed and our Internet is back on.

How's it going for everybody this morning?

Good morning! (((hugs))) It was quite a day! We had a short outage here, but I read of others that were worse...trees fallen on power lines, etc. Signs down, roofs blown off, a billboard sign torn nearly off the frame, blowing in the wind...the sand was NASTY! Ugh! I didn’t see that many tumbleweeds except piled up against fences along the highway.

Howdy, EGC! (((hugs)))

Glad the weather wasn’t too bad for you...and that you got some rain! We got a bit of blowing snow, but nothing stuck and it wasn’t enough to even wet the sidewalks. I know that it was brutal north of us, from Lubbock to Amarillo.

Haven’t heard from my kids in OKC...whether they had lots of bad weather or not.

I haven’t been away from the house, but have to go to the dentist later today. I will probably see some damage on the way.
