NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) — Violent, thieving mobs have been making headlines across the country for the past few years, and now they have hit New York City.
And Maurice Dubois reported in this CBS 2 investigation, the teen mobs have left neighborhoods worried as businesses take matters into their own hands.
Judson Bennett, 78, recently ran into a violent group of teens – often described with the once-benign term “flash mob” – as he made his daily trip to buy a newspaper at his favorite news team.
“I’m approaching the newsstand, and then suddenly there is a tremendous force behind me,” Bennett said.
Bennett ended up with a broken arm.
“I was taken completely by surprise,” he said.
In New York and across the country, the mobs of kids – 20, 30, 40 or more — appear out of nowhere and suddenly charge a newsstand or convenience store.
They ransack, steal and wreak havoc with no consideration for customers, such as Bennett, who get in their way.
“They assemble, they do whatever it is that they’re going to do, and then they disassemble in a matter of minutes,” said Jon Shane, assistant professor of criminal justice at John Jay College. “By the time somebody recognizes what is happening or is injured, if the police are able to respond, it’s slow.”

Yep. This phenom is not isolated to NYC either. Pick any major US city and it's being practiced. The new normal.
I would say that depends on what you shoot them with. A paint ball gun loaded with blue leather dye or itching powder would be an interesting solution.
Yes they could sue you for “damages” but you could counter sue for damages to your shop.
Just wait til ‘Flash Mobs’ become a political tool of terror..............

From the beginning of this phenomenon I have thought it was a calculated training exercise. I still think it is. How well it will function when there is some attrition allied to it...? Well, time will tell.
I don’t think it would serve as a main attack except in very few circumstances, but for disruption and distractions, absolutely. These incidents are live fire exercises.

I had an idea of how to handle a flash mob, at least in a city street like this — skunks. If you can get the kids sprayed with skunk juice, it would be easy to identify them as they all tried to run away.
You could have a spray gun with a good quality stain, and spray the mob. Then you’d mark up their clothing at least. And they’d all be pretty upset at having their clothes damaged.
But we’d need vigilantes to do this, so the store owners can’t be targeted for retaliation. I think some smart young kids who know how to use social media, and therefore can get wind of the flash mobs, armed with pump-pressure sprayers.
Of course, I think it would be fun as well to stake out places in higher floors, and shoot them all with paintball guns.
Imagine a flash mob, and then 20 guys rise up on the roof with overcranked airsoft guns and paintball guns, and unleash a few thousand rounds.
This kind of crime can be fought with cyber tactics. One..subpoena cell phone records of those phones within 50 ft of the stand. Two filter those phone records for tell tale messages. Then go after those who tweeted or text that location and time. Arrest and repeat

In a theoretical dystopia, how about vectoring such people into a prepared kill zone with a false summons? Not that I would ever contemplate such a thing in the real world.
