Tunes For The Troops
**Artist Showcase**So...I saw a show on HBO called *Paul Williams Still Alive* & I guess I had forgotten what a talented man he is. I wasn't able to garner much of his collective works but I hope you enjoy what is posted here.
Paul Hamilton Williams, Jr. (born September 19, 1940 is an Academy Award-winning American composer, musician, songwriter, and actor. He is perhaps best known for popular songs performed by a number of acts in the 1970s including Three Dog Night's "An Old Fashioned Love Song", Helen Reddy's "You and Me Against the World", David Bowie's "Fill Your Heart", and the Carpenters' "We've Only Just Begun" and "Rainy Days and Mondays", as well as his contributions to films such as "Evergreen" from A Star Is Born and "Rainbow Connection" from The Muppet Movie. He has also had a variety of high-profile acting roles such as Little Enos Burdette in the highly successful 1977 action-comedy Smokey and the Bandit, and as the villainous Swan in Brian De Palma's Phantom of the Paradise (which Williams also co-scored, receiving an Oscar nomination in the process), as well as television, theater, and voiceover work for animation.
Enjoy the variety of musical selections that the Canteen Deejays provide throughout the thread. Please ping any DJ with your requests for the Troops!
All music is removed on Monday. Thanks to all the DeeJay's for their time & effort providing entertainment for the Troops!

Sergei Rachmaninov plays The Star Spangled BannerSimple and dignified.
Better late than never.
I saw the Paul Williams movie last week, and I was surprised to see that he was in good health and good spirits. You may remember that last year I dedicated a Canteen weekend to the music and life of Paul Williams.
Regrettably I caught something on the plane back from Seattle, and it has kept me using up a box-and-a-half of tissues on a daily basis. Tonight I may post a little Paul Williams, but other than that I'll save my efforts for Stephen Foster next weekend.

Paul Williams sang background on the Roger Nichols and Friends recordings at A&M. In 1968, he created Holy Mackerel at Warner Brothers to showcase his songs. This was the first time Paul's voice was heard on lead vocals. He also got Richard Perry to produce, and this was the beginning of Perry's career before he produced Barbra Streissand and got rich.
I was doing college radio in Philadelphia in 1968 when this single came out. This should have been a huge hit, and to this day I don't know why it failed to make the charts. I especially love the key change when he goes to the chorus.
