Timbuktu mayor: Mali rebels torched library of ancient manuscripts

Islamist insurgents retreating from the ancient Saharan city of Timbuktu have set fire to a library containing thousands of priceless ancient manuscripts, some dating back to the 13th century, in what the town's mayor described as a "devastating blow" to world heritage.

...

The manuscripts survived for centuries in Timbuktu on the edge of the Sahara hidden in wooden trunks, boxes beneath the sand and caves. The majority are written in Arabic, with some in African languages, and one in Hebrew, and cover a diverse range of topics including astronomy, poetry, music, medicine and women's rights. The oldest dated from 1204.

Seydo Traoré, a researcher at the Ahmed Baba Institute, who fled Timbuktu last year shortly before the rebels arrived, said only a fraction of the manuscripts had been digitised.

"They cover geography, history and religion. We had one in Turkish. We don't know what it said."

Yep, took the words right out of my mouth. Wonder how long before the vast majority of our so-called “scholars” deny it ever happened, as they now do in regards to Alexandria?

Amazingly (well, maybe not anymore), within 24 hours, Iran will announce that it was the Jews that torched the library at Timbuktu, the Muslim 5th column in the West will blame it on the French and seek revenge, Hillary Clinton and John Kerry will blame the act on some as yet unidentified Western incitement for the jihadi actions, and President Zero will withhold comment seeking “a deeper understanding.”

What a terrible loss of knowledge...after surviving all those centuries.

Of course they would burn libraries. The goal is to send the whole world back to the 8th century to match their intellectual, cultural, societal, philosophical, and moral level.

It’s everybody’s MO. In the 18th century, when English colonists from Georgia and South Carolina attacked Spanish Florida, they burned the Franciscan convent in St Augustine. Fearing that they hadn’t done enough damage, they actually went back and burned what was considered one of the most valuable libraries of its time in the territory that is now the US. The Franciscan library consisted of books on the sciences, languages, music, theology and philosophy, as well as maps and of course the documents relating to the records of the Franciscan missions. It was a disastrous loss to later scholars, and certainly to the people of the time.

It’s a very spiteful, gratuitously ugly act but not restricted to Muslims, alas.

They were in the process of being studied, etc, but there were a lot of them, and there weren't many researchers involved, it is, after all, at Timbuktu. Not the easiest place to get to, and certainly not a center of high tech.

This is like when the Taliban blew up those Buddhist statues in Afghanistan.

These animals know only death and destruction and it is about time the world gave it to THEM wholesale. They are a cancer on humanity and need to be wiped from the face of the earth before they engulf us.

And MSNBC will blame it on the Tea Party.

And these Muslim terrorists were likely armed and trained by the US in the Libyan war and its aftermath.
