Gov. Dannel P. Malloy said Wednesday in a nationally televised State of the State speech that Connecticut must not turn its schools into armed camps in response to the murders of 26 educators and children in Newtown.
"Let me be clear. Freedom is not a handgun on the hip of every teacher, and security should not mean a guard posted outside every classroom," Malloy said to the applause of legislators. "That is not who we are in Connecticut, and it is not who we will allow ourselves to become."
Malloy began and ended his third annual State of the State address on the opening day of the General Assembly session with repeated references to the 20 first-graders and six educators shot to death at Sandy Hook Elementary School Dec. 14.
He offered no policy initiatives in the address, a first for the first-term Democratic governor.
The speech was carried live for a national audience on C-Span, as well as the state's public affairs' network, CT-N, and Connecticut stations.
"It won't surprise you that this speech is very different from the one I first envisioned giving," Malloy said. "In the early days of December, I began thinking about what I'd like to say today. Now, while it's only been a few short weeks on the calendar, we have all walked a very long and very dark road together."
Malloy issued a call for unity as the state explores measures on gun control, mental health and school security in the opening weeks of the 2013 General Assembly.

Malloy and his ilk are happy that 20 kids were shot and killed. It advances his agenda.
He just wants to be sure his drug dealing son can continue unmolested.

Malloy added “I like to think of our schools as ‘Target Ranges.’”
Who in Danny's imagination is suggesting either of these?
Governor, you are an amazingly stupid man to be in a position of power.
Malloy only cares about his national political ambitions.
Yeah we sure wouldn’t want to provide the kind of security Congress gets
“Constitution State”
What a joke.
“Let me be clear. Freedom is not a handgun on the hip of every teacher, and security should not mean a guard posted outside every classroom,”
But, apparently, it IS a handgun on the hip of every guard at the local bank, and security posted at the Capital Building.
Priorities, Governor. Kids first.
Unfortunately I live in Maryland and O’Malley is a POS like 99% of the state legislative assholes which is right in step with Steny Hoyer, Ben Cardin, Barbara Mikulski and Chris Van Hollen on the national level.
A pathetic state in which I hope to leave in <5 years when I retire... with my guns locked and loaded.
Wow.. posted that one in the wrong place !!
Then get rid of your armed guards, hypocrite.
Chris Van Hollen is very creepy and has been fast tracked to congressional leadership. Where did they find him?
Gun Free Zones are murder magnets.
Actually I support mandating that all teachers be required to get firearms training and carry in school. Those who refuse should be suspended without pay until they get psychatric treatment for Hoplophobia.
He proposes giving the next nut 20 minutes of free time in a gun free zone and he gets a standing ovation. I mean what can you say to a freaking idiot to wake him up.
Does he or did he have school age children? Did they go to a public school or did he send them to private schools with security. It seems to me that the ones most vociferous about keeping armed security away from our children, never place their children in the same position.
Yeah, no guns in schools. Tell that to the Lanzas of the World. Some fools never learn. The Governor is one of those.
Connecticut parents who are concerned about the safety of their children should probably move to another State.
