(CNSNews.com) - When children from Sandy Hook Elementary school return to class in neighboring Monroe, Conn. today, they'll be entering "the safest school in America," according to the Associated Press.
"Law enforcement officers have been guarding the new school, and by the reckoning of police, it is 'the safest school in America,'" the AP reported Thursday.
"I think right now it has to be the safest school in America," Monroe police Lt. Keith White was quoted as saying.
Having armed guards in schools is the National Rifle Association's suggestion for keeping children safe from the kind of terror that happened last month in Newtown, Conn.
"As parents, we do everything we can to keep our children safe. It is now time for us to assume responsibility for their safety at school," NRA CEO Wayne LaPierre said at a Dec. 21 news conference. "The only thing that stops a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun," he said.
LaPierre noted that five years ago, after the Virginia Tech mass-shooting, he called for armed security guards in every school, and the media "called me crazy."
"But what if, when Adam Lanza started shooting his way into Sandy Hook Elementary School last Friday, he had been confronted by qualified, armed security?" LaPierre asked. "Will you at least admit it's possible that 26 innocent lives might have been spared?"
LaPierre urged Congress "to act immediately, to appropriate whatever is necessary to put armed police officers in every school and to do it now, to make sure that blanket of safety is in place when our children return to school in January."
And that's exactly what they're doing for the children at Sandy Hook Elementary, who are now returning to class under a "blanket of safety."
LaPierre's suggestion to put armed guards in all schools was met with howls of outrage, as summarized by the New York Daily News:
"What about trying to stop the bad guy from getting the gun in the first place? Thats common sense," said Sen. Charles Schumer.
New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg called LaPierre's speech a shameful evasion of the crisis facing our country.
Rep. Chris Murphy (D-Conn.), who represents Newtown in Congress, tweeted that it was "the most revolting, tone deaf statement Ive ever seen."
A number of Republicans also dismissed the NRA's suggestion: New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie said schools shouldn't be "an armed camp" because that wouldn't set a "positive example" for children. "We should be able to figure out other ways to enhance safety," Christie said.
However, policemen are now stationed at public schools in Marlboro, N.J., and other school systems may follow Marlboro's lead, the New Jersey Star-Ledger reported on Wednesday.
They wont report this.
Even though it keeps the kids safe, it interferes with their gun confiscation politics.
FYI Ping.
This is all so wrong. That school should NOT have armed guards. The liberal, leftist Democrats do not want that and I agree with them. Whoever made that decision should be fired.
Folks feel safer when there are people with guns around.....Oh no. Wait...... #liberal

I don’t agree with you; nevertheless, Columbine HAD an armed guard on duty in 1999, who apparently had little skill with a weapon. He might have been able to save lives.

Well we have been trying to stop the drug addicts from getting drugs for decades. How is that working out you moron?
New Law. Hey criminals, no more guns for you. You are not allowed to have or use guns. Okay? Please. Pretty please.. We have a Government dominated by total idiots........
Oops, linked to an ultra-leftist site. Sorry about that. Bet the comment will be yanked.

Look it up to confirm if you need. Neil Gardner was the guard.
Where were these armed guards on December 14, 2012?

Gee, you are in total agreement with Micheal Moore then? Maybe YOU need to do some research instead of just spouting (and linking to) the ultra left lies. Bottom line, the Columbine Guard was outside of the school when the shooting began. He did try to engage the shooters, but could not get any closer than 60 yards before exchanging gunfire. He was only armed with his service pistol. He knew he was up against at least 2 guys armed with rifles. He choose to not rush in against that by himself. He waited for backup. You think you would have done something different? Troll perhaps?
You almost don’t deserve a response.
I don’t know what Moore has to say about it and don’t care.
According to the leftist link I provided, the guard allegedly fired only 4 shots.
I was responding to another poster who said we do NOT need armed guards.
Get with the program, a***ole.
Too late the Phalaropes have flown
At the temporary school for Sandy Hook students, half of their purpose is to keep the media at bay.
So you admit you are uninformed, don’t understand that firing 4 shots is an engagement, and don’t recognize sarcasm from the other poster. Then call me names.
You shouldn’t have responded, your ignorance is showing.
You are correct. The problem was not that the guard was ineffective. The problem was that the policy was geared toward hostage taking, not active shooters. It was the same policy that brought us 911.. Do nothing... back away... negotiate... give them small things... make friends with them... finally get them to give up...
It can work when you are dealing with someone who wants to make a point or is just looking for attention.
When you are dealing with people who want to kill lots of innocents, and do not care if they survive... it is disastrous.
Policies where changed after 911.
As a matter of fact, whoever wants armed guards at the schools in a gun-free zone should be imprisoned for life or shot on the spot. </s> How do you like that?
Have a couple of parents from each school take turns volunteering, preferably pick military veterans to volunteer, and or provided basic training for others who might need training.
I'd bet the rent the parents would be lining up around the cafeteria to volunteer.
Many in communities all over America would be more than willing to train the parents who might need training.
Parents would be much better, as they would be more vigilant due to having a much greater stake in this endeavor than the overpaid from the local governments.
This is the American way to do things.
The only thing the police should do is volunteer to conduct basic backgrounds on the volunteers. Nothing more.
People like you give conservatives a bad reputation.

What a bunch of idiots, starting with Smucky Schumer.
