The year 1869 started well for Louis Moreau Gottschalk. He turned 40 and wrote some of his finest material. South America was turning him into a rich man, but he never thought much of hanging onto his money. This piece is a cute little salon mazurka.

Gottschalk: “Forget-Me-Not”

This is the kind of piece that made him such a great draw in the concert halls of South America.

Grand Triumphal Fantasy on the Brazilian National Anthem

A little hint of Chopin.

Grand Scherzo

In 1869, Louis Moreau Gottschalk wrote another piece for piano and orchestra that has managed to survive. This gives you an idea of what he could with a concerto-like piece. His orchestration is clumsy at times, but this piece is about the piano.

Gottschalk: Variations on the Portuguese National Anthem

The year 1869 did not end well, for death struck without warning. Louis was playing a concert at Rio de Janeiro when he collapsed between pieces. Three weeks later, a week before Christmas, acute peritonitis took him down. The most likely culprit was his appendix. He was buried in Brooklyn. Vandals wrecked his monument in 1959, but it was fixed only last month.

Today, Gottschalk is remembered as a footnote in American music. But he and Stephen Foster, whom I will cover next, laid the groundwork for Scott Joplin, who in turn paved the way for George Gershwin. It was the first small step in the establishment of American music.
