A newspaper in New York has received a wave of criticism from its readers after publishing the names and addresses of all of the individuals with handgun or pistol permits in its coverage area.
Hundreds of residents in New York's Westchester and Rockland counties were surprised to find their names and addresses listed on a map posted by The Journal News on Sunday. Users can click any dot on the map to see which of their neighbors has a permit for a gun.
The map sparked more than 500 comments from readers within a day of its appearance on the website, many of them voicing outrage at the paper's decision to make the information public.
"This is CRAZY!! why in the world would you post every licensed gun owner information?? What do you hope to accomplish by doing this. This is the type of thing you do for sex offenders not law abiding gun owners. What next? should i hang a flag outside my house that says I own a gun? I am canceling my subscription with your paper today!!!" said commenter Curtis Maenza.
"How about a map of the editorial staff and publishers of Gannett and Journal News with names and addresses of their families ," wrote commenter George Thompson.
All of the names and addresses were compiled through public records. The paper also requested the information from Putnam County, which is still compiling the records for publication, according to The Journal News' website.
In a statement to ABC News, The Journal News said its readers "are understandably interested to know about guns in their neighborhoods," because of the conversation about gun control on its website after the shooting in Newtown, Conn., last week. .

She has security to handle the safety part.
Just wondering if she might have had anything to do with this. What with her friends in high places.
Just wondering.....
“All of those that were NOT listed can become targets of thieves and others that wish to do harm to defenseless individuals.”

Very good point.
.
I think that whoever obtained that information should have their name, address and phone number also published on the internet in order for concerned citizes to send them a letter expressing their disappointment in that assignment......
The proper way to respond to this is to lay the lives of he owner of the paper, the editor, the reporter and the lawyers who filed the FOI lawsuit.
Publish their work and home addresses, their cars’ make/model/plates, their SSN’s, their bank, investment and insurance account numbers, any other real property addresses and titles, their voter registration records, their home’s valuations, divorce decrees, property tax records, etc
Journalists need to learn the lesson to leave non-public people alone. Since the leftists won’t learn through any other way, and have no shame or manners, this lesson needs to be taught to them the hard way.
The publisher’s home has 4.099999 bathrooms! Check the Zillow link on Instapundit and you can also see it’s worth 1.3 million $, and get an estimate of the monthly mortgage payment. I wonder how many burglars would love to know if it’s guarded by Dobermans (oh sorry, how sexist, I meant Doberpersons).
Ya know sumpin? Perdy soon, they’re gonna haf ta see who’s got hisself (or herself) a gun by a-lookin’ in da fon buk.
Dat’s wut.
Merry Christmas to FR, and may God Bless us, everyone!
Big deal. Pick up any phone book from a southern state or Alaska, and you have a list of names and addresses. Owning a gun in some places is no more rare than owning a frying pan.
Meant to say “You have a list of gun owners”
One of their readers had the right idea.
“How about a map of the editorial staff and publishers of Gannett and Journal News with names and addresses of their families?”
This, too, is available with public records, and could be posted on the Internet. Possibly with the “editorial comment” that “these are names and addresses of people who do not respect gun rights, so they likely do not have any guns where they live.”
If giving out the names and addresses of the newspaper employees seems harsh, remember that they started by subjecting innocent people to invasion by violent criminals.
Therefore, the sauce good for the goose is good for the gander. Or, in this case, the ink-stained scoundrels.
This grandma packs heat.
Better yet...sue their a... if anyone is robbed!!!!ha.
This is so obviously a threat to gun owners. With the media parotting the threats from the left, that NRA members are to blame for the school shooting, I think it doesn’t take an Einstein to see that the way Obama and the left are going to win a “cold” Civil War, is to run us out of the country- with huge taxes, or kill us by putting us on a list of undesirables, encouraging crack heads and entitlement voters to seek revenge , and then laying in wait.
That is this threat that I see.
The have the media, education, the federal government, the military and more than half the voters.
I believe they are feeling pretty brave now.
BTW...now every rape and battery victim...along with anyone who has their car broken into or their bicycle stolen can sue these jerks!!!ha.
Merry Christmas to you, and to all the Freeper band!
Thanks for the link. I love it. The credit card details on one of the people at the newspaper was real good.
yet they won’t publish maps of perverts, thiefs, or people who have actually broken the law. how about a map where the illegals are in their town? how bout a map where all the school board people or politicians live?

She has a Twitter account too: https://twitter.com/janhasson
The reporter also has a Twitter account (https://twitter.com/croyle1) but it’s private. Doesn’t she believe in the public’s right to know?
Correction: C. Royle is the editor, not the reporter.
