Ryan, Rubio Seek Party Rebranding
WSJ ^ | 04 Dec 2012 | Neil King Jr.

Posted on 12/04/2012 6:38:07 PM PST by Theoria

Two of the Republican Party's most prominent voices, Rep. Paul Ryan of Wisconsin and Florida Sen. Marco Rubio, laid out their visions for broadening the GOP's economic message in dual speeches Tuesday, as conservatives seek new moorings in the aftermath of Mitt Romney's presidential defeat last month.

The speeches revealed Mr. Ryan and Mr. Rubio—respectively, the party's most recent vice-presidential nominee and a freshman senator seen as a rising star—moving briskly to rebrand both themselves and their party at a time of debate and introspection over how to steer the GOP in a new direction.

The men, both seen as potential 2016 presidential hopefuls, used a packed awards dinner hosted by the Jack Kemp Foundation to lay out their views on the role of government in strengthening the middle class and assisting the poor.

Mr. Ryan's speech was his first since his loss as part of the GOP presidential ticket a month ago. Some of their remarks came off as subtle jabs at Mr. Romney and his contention during the campaign that 47% of Americans were irredeemably reliant on government aid.

"Some say that…too manypeople want things from government," said Mr. Rubio, the son of Cuban immigrants. "But I am still convinced that the overwhelming majority of our people just want what my parents had: a chance."

Mr. Ryan noted that the late Mr. Kemp—his onetime mentor, a congressman and a predecessor as a GOP vice-presidential nominee—"hated the idea that any part of America could be written off."

Conservatives have criticized the Romney campaign for focusing so heavily on small-business owners and for not making a convincing case for how his ideas would benefit the poor and the working class.

Um... do we not KNOW the history of the GOP? We WERE the ‘Third Party’ formed in 1854 and we’re the b@stards that GOT Abraham Lincoln elected!!

Some days Freepers simply amaze me. Uneducated d@mn fools, LOL!

But, by all means, let’s form ANOTHER party and start all over again because I’m FINISHED with this one!

And THIS TIME - let’s get it the hell RIGHT from here to ETERNITY (which is pretty much right around the corner!)

Torches and Pitchforks at the ready! :)

No, they're not playing the media's game.

Ryan's budget already got passed in the House. It's the Senate that didn't move on it.

We can no longer look to DC to solve this mess.

Not in this century yet; nope. Ain't happening. The worst part is that many voters no longer believe those guys and gals are willing or able to protect America from all enemies.

We already have, how many third parties? 50? 100? How is another going to fix the problem?

Most won’t get off the keyboard to fix the current one, so exactly how will the new one be successful?

Facts don't seem to matter much here anymore.

Pretty much whatever the MSM baits the right with is swallowed.

Good luck with the Jeb Bush thing, because it will come to pass.

Even if he wins, he'll just drive in the last nails of our Agenda 21 coffin.

There comes a day when you just have to trade for another truck whether you want to or not.

They just can’t see that the GOP is one dead animal and cannot be revived. Someone put it perfectly, it’s like “putting lipstick on a corpse.”

One doesn’t generally buy a truck with no engine or transmission and think they’re ahead of the game.

You might be encouraged if you could actually see the number of conservatives who do not depend on the MSM for news or entertainment. I find more and more these past three years or so.

All FReepers might be encouraged if they knew that broadcast advertising does not really work as well as it did in the past. Not by a significantly long shot. Ad agencies want to keep that a secret as much as possible.

I want to thank you for this post. I still have not had TV news on since election night. We are on dangerous ground on whom to trust among ensconced politicians any way associated with the treacherous Establishment who are actively coalescing around silencing the base.

They are actively seeking to broaden their base elsewhere, obviously, in order to make up for losing conservatives.

I happen to believe that the only visible action at the moment has been only among Libertarians, who bothered to create push back, friction and aggressive tactics and actually held the line. They are fiscal and constitutional zealots who will be a force.

Our wing simply discusses the problem. We are no force at all, and less of one alone without the Libertarians. We need to allign together. And quick.

I'm trying to think what your response might mean but it doesn't compute. Did you miss my point? Sometimes, you have to get a working vehicle in order to go places and do work. Sometimes, when someone is not doing their job, you've got to let them go. Thanks, Clint.

The current leaders of the Republican Party have failed conservatives repeatedly and do not warrant our continued support. The methodology of how to best replace them will be discussed on many FR threads in the time to come. All options should be on the table.

Oh, yeah drag these two politicians out there so the blinded republicans follow them.

No, thanks!

And all it will be is discussion. There won’t be a plan put to paper, much less put into action.

Problem is...on FR for example they still jump at the bait offered by a lot of MSM articles.

Oh no, it’s not futile, but it’s not going to happen at FR. Other venues yes, but not here.

“Discussing” is all that Rubio and Ryan are doing. That’s the media’s game. Talk and talk, get reported on, get web ads, get ratings, get contributions, get another trip to Iowa and an interview on Hannity.

If Ryan and Rubio actually believed people voted for them for ACTION, theyd pass Ryan’s budget (I know, again) and push out the Speaker, defund Zerocare, kill the AMT forever, go home... Instead, the intrigue and phony deadlines and speeches get the ratings and the coverage. And the cash.
