(Reuters) - Egyptian police battled thousands of protesters outside President Mohamed Mursi's palace in Cairo on Tuesday, prompting the Islamist leader to leave the building, two presidential sources said.
Police fired teargas at demonstrators angered by Mursi's drive to hold a referendum on a new constitution on December 15. Some broke through police lines around his palace and protested next to the perimeter wall.
Several thousand people had gathered nearby in what they dubbed "last warning" protests against Mursi, who infuriated opponents with a November 22 decree that expanded his powers. "The people want the downfall of the regime," the crowd chanted.
"The president left the palace," a presidential source, who declined to be named, told Reuters. A security source at the presidency also said the president had left the building.
Mursi ignited a storm of unrest in his bid to prevent a judiciary still packed with appointees of ousted predecessor Hosni Mubarak from derailing a troubled political transition.

We could be seeing the end of Morsi in Egypt and FoxNews is talking about Anna Wintour. WTF?
The Egyptians don’t want him.
They DO NOT WANT a fundamentalist Islamic regime.
Too bad Lebanon and Iran didn’t have the same resolve...
I predict Morsi is already a ‘gonner’. He’s probably been told to leave the palace or be dead.
Lot of optimism on this thread.
I hope it is justified.
Remember: Morsi has a powerful friend in the White House, and he’s also purged the Egyptian army.
Why don’t we oppose Mursi as we opposed Mubarak? God forbid they should have a real democracy?
The optimism here is unfounded thus far.
The Egyptian military leaders could be orchestrating a coup as we speak. I’ve been watching this closely.. The protesters have kept the pressure on.. They have more guts than Americans do. ‘They don’t want no stinkin’ Dictatorship AGAIN’ Unlike in America, possession is 9/10ths of the law in Egypt. If Morsi’s on the run it could be over for him.
I think that’s a pretty spot-on assessment of the situation.
It will be interesting to see how this shakes out.
“Looks like the Egyptians aren’t happy with Obama’s little Dictator.”
I believe we are seeing the edges of some of the “overeaching” that I have been talking about in some of my other posts. Let’s hope this thing snowballs, and blows up in snot nose’s face.
Don’t forget that Morsi and the MB purged a lot of the officers when they took over.
Nice. Some folks are setting off Roman Candles. When in Egypt...I guess.
Didn’t the President just pledge some 300 Billion to Morsi? Where are we going to send the check now???
Hillary certainly does not want to make Huma mad. So if Mursi ends up using his Chemical WMD on the rebels and the White House does not condemn the act, can we at least start investigating Hillary's affair with Huma then ?
But if it wasn’t a proper, Stalinist-style purge (i.e., they are still among the living) those officers may continue to exercise great influence over the bulk of their troops. They might be back before we know it.
I’d hope Huma had better taste. But then again she did marry Wiener and have his kid.
