ERMELO, South Africa -- In a country cursed by one of the world's highest murder rates, being a white farmer makes a violent death an even higher risk.
Whether attacks have been motivated by race or robbery, a rising death rate from rural homicides is drawing attention to the lack of change on South Africa's farms nearly two decades after the end of apartheid -- and to the tensions burgeoning over enduring racial inequality.
Some of South Africa's predominantly white commercial farmers go as far as to brand the farm killings a genocide.
'Potentially explosive' issue On the other side of the divide, populists are seizing on the discontent among the black majority to demand a forced redistribution of white-owned farms along the lines of neighboring Zimbabwe.
"The issue is potentially explosive," said Lechesa Tsenoli, deputy minister for land reform, arguing that South Africa's future depends on ending inequality on the farms.
The economic change promised by Nelson Mandela's African National Congress (ANC) when white-minority rule ended in 1994 has been even slower in the countryside than in cities and mines, where at least small elites of black South Africans have prospered.

Any whites in either Zimbabwe or South Africa should be doing their best to emigrate to the West real fast. When collapse comes, it will be all the white mans fault.
South Africa and Zimbabwe will still have mineral wealth. Eventually, somebody sufficiently ruthless will show up and decide to get that wealth. In the process, they will exterminate the black Africans, and import other workers for the mines.

Many white South Africans have tried, only to be turned away or sent to the back of the line in favor of unskilled violent Somalis, Haitians known to be HIV/AIDs carriers, or border jumpers, ALL of whom immediately climb on to the gravy train pulled by fewer and fewer producers each year. Not only don’t the western white governments give a damn about the beleaguered white South Africans, they are afraid that giving them asylum will be a bad reflection upon the black ANC governance of South Africa, and would legitimise through recognition, the genocide being perpetrated upon the white South Africans. So people like the highly-skilled white South African, with their famous work ethic, are given the cold shoulder, while people whose only qualification is their “melanin enrichment”, have the red carpet rolled out for them, any possible “entitlement” showered upon them, while their part of the “bargain” is to “enrich” the US with their vibrant violence, exotic diseases, lack of skills, antagonism to assimilation and to whites, dirty cultural habits, and an ability to quickly learn their way through the maze of benefits and entitlements, though it’s beyond them to learn English.
Bottom line, western governments don’t want more whites in any significant numbers, even with their desirable skills, and don’t want to make the black rulers look bad by admitting that the whites are in need-desparate need-of asylum.
South African whites need to get out, by whatever means necessary, before it is too late.
For example, in the late 18th & early 19th Centuries, both nationals crossed the mountain ranges near the coast in Conestoga type wagons, going into the largely unknown interiors, armed with long rifles, their Bibles & what refinements they could carry in that fashion. One driving through the South African countryside in the 1960s, would encounter the most significant difference. Whereas we have largely forgotten the significance of a pioneer history, every South African dorp (town), I visited, appeared to have its own pioneer monument, with images of what looked like Kentucky "long-riflemen" being celebrated.
To understand the vulnerability of the Afrikaner farmer to brigandry, today, you have to understand that because of a dryer climate, the family farms tended to be quite large, to be practical. This coupled with a pioneer love of space, meant that the homes were very spread out--Arthur Conan Doyle makes a point about this in his History of The Great Boer War;--a point from the British viewpoint.
By contrast, the various Bantu nations--and they clearly are diverse nations--grouped their tribal housing in close-together patterns, surrounded by large tracts of virtually undeveloped tribal lands. The most striking aspect of Bantu "farming," if you can call it that, when I traveled around South Africa in 1966, was that they did not fence their livestock off the road. One had to be constantly on guard, as one came around a curve, not to run into someone's livestock.
Only an idiot--I know everyone at Reuters is not an idiot--but only an idiot would expect Bantu agriculture to be on a par with American or Afrikaner agriculture. (The linkage is intentional.) This is not intended as an insult to anyone. The Bantu have different values, different priorities.
On the subject of Aparthied, let me refer you to the section on "Apartheid Revisited," in the Chapter on Perspective & Focus, in the online version of my Conservative Debate Handbook. The vicious misrepresentation of Apartheid by the Academic & Media Lefts has not been motivated by any true altruism. On the contrary, it reflects the compulsion of those seeking to force all Mankind into some form of one-world order.
It is interesting, although the Left would never admit to the fact, that the Great Society types actually adopted part of the Apartheid program in America, to encourage job creation in the inner cities here. I forget what they called it; but it was the same as the National Party was pursuing with respect to the Bantu homelands in South Africa.
