Hurricane Sandy From Space

NASA

Just in case you thought the Hurricane hype couldn't get any louder, check out this dispatch from Weather Channel meterologist Stu Ostro:

- History is being written as an extreme weather event continues to unfold, one which will occupy a place in the annals of weather history as one of the most extraordinary to have affected the United States.

- REGARDLESS OF WHAT THE OFFICIAL DESIGNATION IS NOW OR AT/AFTER LANDFALL -- HURRICANE (INCLUDING IF "ONLY" A CATEGORY ONE), TROPICAL STORM, POST-TROPICAL, EXTRATROPICAL, WHATEVER -- OR WHAT TYPE OF WARNINGS ARE ISSUED BY THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE AND NATIONAL HURRICANE CENTER -- PEOPLE IN THE PATH OF THIS STORM NEED TO HEED THE THREAT IT POSES WITH UTMOST URGENCY...

- With Sandy having already brought severe impacts to the Caribbean Islands and a portion of the Bahamas, and severe erosion to some beaches on the east coast of Florida, it is now poised to strike the northeast United States with a combination of track, size, structure and strength that is unprecedented in the known historical record there...

- A meteorologically mind-boggling combination of ingredients is coming together:

Well stated TT. My ‘first’ was Audrey in ‘57 living in south La. Now today in metro areas, its BIG news if the electricity is out for a while and they can’t watch their real-life drama TV shows.

Not to minimize the danger of any high winded storm, but the HYPE on a CAT1 is what is revealing to what is defined as ‘hardship’.

We are not the rugged individuals we used to be. Now we depend on FEMA and the government, shared risk and common denominators.

good luck out there.

Most of the links I wanted to look at on www.weather.com are down. I guess too many people want to look at them, too. And I am directly in the affected area, good ol’ NYC.

Water is already up to the boardwalk in the Rockaways.

And here's a video made earlier today: The Day Before Tomorrow - Sandy 2012

Good posts you cited—but it is the impact on the heavily populated CT coast, NYC, Philly, DC corridor that have my attention.

The ten million power outages projected actually sounds a little low...

Photo circa 1960 in New York City near the World Trade Center showing storm surge and flooding from hurricane Donna. The storm surge from Sandy is expected to be worse.

You cannot invade the mainland United States. There would be a rifle behind every blade of grass.

Unless you feel like strolling across the border from Mexico or or drifting in across the ocean as a misunderstood Muslim. As someone said in another thread tonight, this election is mostly white people against everybody else.

Not trying to hijack this thread, just noticed your tagline.

That was a pretty impressive storm. I happened to be flying from Charlotte to Chicago that day, and we arrived at Ohare just after the main storm had gone through. Luckily it weakened as it went through the Chicago area. (It actually started well to the WNW of Chicago.) What got interesting was my commuter flight, somewhat later, out of Ohare. A sort of "ripple" / secondary wave formed behind the main storm, formed a nasty squall line that did much more damage in the immediate area than the main storm, and plowed through right at our departure time. We passengers were rush-rush-rushed onto our little Canada Regional Jet and we got out a few minutes early, just barely beating the squall line. It was kinda wild as we took off pointed right at the squall line, banked hard, bounced around pretty good for a minute or two, and then outran it. The cloud to ground lightning, as viewed from the air, and sometimes between breaks in the clouds, seemed often to be just a few miles away. It being nighttime by then, the illumination of the ground by the lightning was dramatic, and the whole show was spectacular!

I saw one pretty large secondary flash on the ground, immediately after a bolt hit that spot. I figured that secondary flash could have been power lines, but I also wonder if it could have been a transformer. (Said secondary flash lasted a good second, I would say.) I'm sure that a lot of our military guys / any regular pilots have been through a lot more fun, but for this "occaisional" commercial flyer, it was quite an experience. For an awful lot of people, it was no "fun" at all, of course.

Back in 2009, I was in the middle of the big ice storm that tagged AR / KY / S. IL (power out for many, for 3 weeks in mid-winter). And then a few months later I was dragging my generator to my Mom's in S. IL, which got hit by a "Convective Vortex" that developed on the north end of a Derecho. Winds topped out at around 106 mph in that baby, as I recall. According to the NWS, later, "most meteorologists will only see a derecho like this once in their career".

Prayers up for all those in the path of Sandy, whether I agree with them politically or not!

Yes, and had he sympathies, surely some would favor us.

I'm not worried about sympathies... I'm working the whole absolved and redeemed thing. Some of us need it. Regardless of the current local, temporal situation. ;)

I think we may have been hyped. I went to weather.com and pulled up the five day forecast for DC. NY, Boston, Binghamton,NY and York,Pa.

In none of the forecasts was there any suggestion of flooding or rains over 1 inch, or of winds over 40 miles per hour. One would think if the world were coming to an end due to weather, it would show up somewhere in the local forecast.

“so that means high tide and WEREWOLVES”
“That made me laugh!”

But, do you have your silver bullets to dispatch the werewolf who shows up on a full moon? It’s bad enough to have high water without complicating it with a freaky werewolf running around trying to bite your neck.

but I also wonder if it could have been a transformer.

The local RACES (look it up) net sometimes asks for 'green flashes not associated with lightning'.

Well Duh... even cooks with ham radio licenses know that copper oxidizes to a green color.

White flash? Lightning (or a nuke, and if that's the case, there are other problems). Greenish flash (you will know in the afterimage, once you've seen one) is probably a transformer.

The oil coming out of busted and burned transformers isn't particularly something you want to roll around in, either. Run away works for that.

Difference between a storm spotter and a storm chaser is 50 IQ points. ;)

Political signs...oh my. Hundreds of them. Halloween decorations....this is not going to end well.

Alot of old trees, huge limbs, and saturated ground. Again...scary as hell even not considering the high winds.

agreed, here down south we know about storms but to listen to my MIL who is up in MA then one would think this was Andrew and Katrina all rolled in one.

People buying loads of food, stocking up with various items and the media will use this to cover on Libya and this cover up.
