~ Hall of Heroes ~ Stephen Holden Doane Info from here. |
|
Stephen Holden Doane (October 13, 1947 March 25, 1969) was a United States Army officer and a recipient of the United States military's highest decorationthe Medal of Honorfor his actions in the Vietnam War. Doane joined the Army from Albany, New York in 1967, and went through Officer Candidate School at Fort Benning. By March 25, 1969 was serving as a first lieutenant in Company B, 1st Battalion, 5th Infantry Regiment, 25th Infantry Division. During a firefight on that day, in Hau Nghia Province, Republic of Vietnam, Doane destroyed an enemy bunker by carrying an activated hand grenade into it, sacrificing himself to take out the hostile position. Doane, aged 21 at his death, was buried in Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington County, Virginia. |
For conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action at the risk of his life above and beyond the call of duty. First Lt. Doane was serving as a platoon leader when his company, engaged in a tactical operation, abruptly contacted an enemy force concealed in protected bunkers and trenches. Three of the leading soldiers were pinned down by enemy crossfire. One was seriously wounded. After efforts of 1 platoon to rescue these men had failed, it became obvious that only a small group could successfully move close enough to destroy the enemy position and rescue or relieve the trapped soldiers, 1st Lt. Doane, although fully aware of the danger of such an action, crawled to the nearest enemy bunker and silenced it. He was wounded but continued to advance to a second enemy bunker. As he prepared to throw a grenade, he was again wounded. Undaunted, he deliberately pulled the pin on the grenade and lunged with it into the enemy bunker, destroying this final obstacle. 1st Lt. Doane's supreme act enabled his company to rescue the trapped men without further casualties. The extraordinary courage and selflessness displayed by this officer were an inspiration to his men and are in the highest traditions of the U.S. Army |
Please remember the Canteen is here to honor, support and entertain our troops and their families. This is a politics-free zone! Thanks for helping us in our mission! |

Oh my goodness...he’s arrived! He’s probably really tired of the cold rain, especially when your rain is probably much warmer.
Good timing for you....I’ve done the phone play-by-play thing before. Does a push mean he gets nothing even tho they won?

A push means nobody wins except the bookie. My brother isn't Giants fan but he thought a straight 7 pt spread was a good bet.
That's not Lonesome nor is it a plover, A flock of sandpipers were out on the rocks this morning gobbling up everything the could find....they didn't even fly away as I approached. Guess they don't like the food they get on flights either.

Good evening, Mac...*HUGS*...my Dad brought me his military folder this afternoon. WOW! I’m really enjoying reading some of his writings. I have found what I think is discharge paperwork, but on cursory inspection do not see a form that says DD-214. Gonna google it and see what it looks like.
I need to get busy typing what he’s written and getting it saved.

Kathy - they didn't have DD-214 in WWII. I'm looking at my uncle's separation form - it was a WD AGO Form - can't quite make out the number - think it's 55.

Didn’t know that there was no DD 214 issued for WWII vets; my father a WWII vet, went in in 1939 and stayed until 1960 so he got a DD 214. Thanks for the heads up, Doc.

Kathy - if you have any questions about your Dad's records, feel free to direct them to me. I have records of several of my uncles who served in WWII - I'm developing some degree of expertise in extracting information from them. FReep mail, email or phone me. I'd be glad to help if I can.

You're welcome, Brother! I didn't know it myself until several weeks ago when I got my father's records from NPRC. The state of records from that era is not good - the WWII records were the worst hit in the 1973 fire. Very bad - both of my Gavin uncles' records were lost - got basically nothing for my Uncle Jerry - a very limited sampling of my Uncle Joe's records.
