Teachers Appear to be the Winner
The Chicago Sun Times ^ | September 14, 2012 | Mark Brown

If the point of going on strike is to get a better deal than you would have received without it, then the Chicago Teachers Union is already a pretty clear winner this week in its confrontation with Mayor Rahm Emanuel and his school board.

If the point of going on strike is to give voice to the frustrations of your members and to allow them to vent their anger, then you’d have to say the CTU was a runaway winner on that front as well.

And if the point of going on strike is to let your employer know you’re not going to be taken for granted in the future, then score another one for the CTU.

Are you detecting a pattern here?

As negotiators worked into the night to put what were expected to be the finishing touches on a contract settlement that union leaders could take to a vote Friday, it’s a tad premature to assess winners and losers not knowing the full parameters of a final deal.

But unless the union totally capitulates on the last major issue on the table, it’s hard to see how CTU President Karen Lewis and her members come out of this week as anything but a decisive winner.

In the end, only the students and the taxpayers will suffer, but Rahm Emanuel's reputation has taken a serious hit.

Rahm Emanuel's reputation has taken a serious hit.

You mean I'm going to have to find new epithets besides scumsucking hyperflatulent communist butt-kissing suckup toady?

They were smart. They timed this thing to create maximum trouble for Obama in his re-election campaign. No doubt he called up Rahm and told him “whatever they want, just GIVE IT TO THEM and make this go away!” Could maybe have milked it for even more if the Mooslims did not come along and blow them off the front page.

Maybe I was wrong. I thought that this would go on a few more days, have a bigger piece of the news, a few more busted heads, and Barry-O would stop fundraising long enough to swoop in, in full regalia, and "broker" a "settlement", followed by a beer summit.

Is my cynicism showing?

"In the end, only the students and the taxpayers will suffer, but Rahm Emanuel's reputation has taken a serious hit."

That is, until the precedent, that a strike will get you anything you want from Rahm is realized. And then there will be more strikes and more people hurt especially tax payers.

Hey but they elected a democrat. What'd you expect?

Of course the government teachers win.

What did anyone expect to happen?

Rahm’s reputation is going to take a serious hit. For all his faults, I always thought him to be a tough negotiator. Not so much anymore.

I am just wondering where the “Amen Chorus” that continually wants to find a way to cut California loose is today? We may have it bad here in California, but Illinois is the clear leader in the looney Left’s destructive acts. I guess it baffles all of you as to how to “carve out Illinois” from the rest of the country because it isn’t on a coast. You all need to get creative all of you who are “huddled in Texas.”

It should say "Teachers UNIONS Appear to be the Winner"

Who would have thought that when the union went to battle with the person that they paid good money to get elected that they would have one? Oh, the irony...

This whole thing seems orchestrated.

Chicagoans deserve this. But they should be made to pay for it themselves.

Those teachers are the lowest performing and most overpaid teachers in the country.

Rahm doesn’t mind spending YOUR money

This was all staged by the Democrats. Rahm appears to be a tough negotiator and the unions go marching around. Then, after considerable soundbites, management capitulates, the stupid teachers getting everything they wanted and the taxpayers are left holding the bag together with their illiterate children. Support the status quo.

I think it was one big staged event to deliver the rank & file to the democrats.

Union boss: See we would have never gotten this with the Republicans.

The reason Obama wanted it over is the teacher’s union was revealing that the real underlying inflation and the real lack of growth is incomes is turning America into a nation of welfare clients.

They were asking for 16% at 3 years of 5%+ each year.

That is about equal to core inflation in July, which was 4.8% annually, and the August numbers of total inflation pegged it at a 20% per year rate.

These teachers were about to reveal that the emperor had no clothes.

And, I’m not sure they even realized it.

Actually, this is how Detroit became Detroit.

The more the Left ‘wins” in taxation and cultural cleansing, the better the guarentee is that Chicago will fall.
