FREEDOM ISN’T FREE!

It Is Purchased With The Blood Of Patriots!

“Freedom Isn’t Free”

By DDR Kelly Strong USCG (ret)

I watched the flag pass by one day,
It fluttered in the breeze.
A young Marine saluted it,
And then he stood at ease.
I looked at him in uniform
So young, so tall, so proud,
With hair cut square and eyes alert
He’d stand out in any crowd.

Eternal Father, Strong to Save

I thought how many men like him
Had fallen through the years.
How many died on foreign soil
How many mothers’ tears?
How many pilots’ planes shot down?
How many died at sea
How many foxholes were soldiers’ graves?
No, freedom isn’t free.

Taps
(Click)

I heard the sound of Taps one night,
When everything was still,
I listened to the bugler play
And felt a sudden chill.
I wondered just how many times
That Taps had meant “Amen,”
When a flag had covered a coffin.
Of a brother or a friend.

I thought of all the children,
Of the mothers and the wives,
Of fathers, sons and husbands
With interrupted lives,
I thought about a graveyard
At the bottom of the sea
Of unmarked graves in Arlington,
No, freedom isn’t free.

In 1837, Frederic Chopin published another set of four mazurkas. The first is a bit on the contemplative side.

Chopin: Mazurka in C minor, Op. 30/1

The second is a bit more bravura.

Chopin: Mazurka in B minor, Op. 30/2

The third moves back and forth between joyous light and pensive shadow.

Chopin: Mazurka in D-flat, Op. 30/3

The fourth is a bit pensive, smiles a bit, but leaves with a frown.

Chopin: Mazurka in C# minor, Op. 30/4

I loved playing that impromptu as a teenager. The piece I’ll post in about 10 minutes will blow your mind.

In 1837, the 27 year old Frederic Chopin wrote of the greatest warhorses of the piano repertory. When people think of Chopin, they think of this piece. He asked his students to play the spooky opening notes as if they were stepping carefully through a charnel house. The “trio” section in A Major is sweet, and the turn to C# minor is an introduction to a run for the right hand that requires extreme agility. I could never get it up to speed. Follow the score if you dare!

Chopin: Scherzo #2 in B-flat minor, Op. 31
